I have a 1994 80 series auto wagon with 256,000 k on the clock. The vehicle along with an impeccable paint work is in show room condition, always garaged and serviced. I have just completed a 3 month caravan trip hauling 2 1/2 ton van loaded. Before the journey I revamped the suspension fitted airbags, new struts front/back and new rear coils. added electric brakes for the towing and a second battery.
All set to go and had test runs and was disappointed with the towing performance.
I run standard petrol, and also have the second fuel tank converted to LPG many years ago (when LPG was relatively cheap)
So, I did some research and asked many questions - some answers were to convert back to free wheel hubs, others said to fit extractors, all had a 50/50 for and against.
So, I ended up fitting two hyclones between the air filter and throttle body, fitted 6 pulstar plasma core spark plugs, better leads, new air filter core, and increased the timing a TAD. I also cut out the small resinator muffler and welding in a piece of straight s/s pipe.
It did make a a big difference to the performance especially when you plant the foot coming to a climb. Mind you she still dies to a degree on long climbs where you cannot get a run.
I am happy with Toy which is like family, the only drawback is she is an an alcoholic, likes fuel. Averaged 4 1/2 k a liter for petrol and 3 1/2 k a liter of LPG. I drove at the different speed limits 100 k and 110 k an hr.
I also have the latest fitted Alpine navi station, coupled with blue tooth, reversing camera on Toy and van, a CB, and slide out electric towing mirrors.
Am I happy? I would be happier if the fuel was not $1.50 a liter
