Hi everyone

Greetings from Barcelona, Spain.

Your name: Mario
Your Cruiser: 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser LJ70, 2.4T Diesel, 3-Door Hard Top, 260.000kms.
Mods on your Cruiser: Since it has a historic license plate, state regulations require the car to remain unmodified to preserve its original condition. So, no mods are allowed as part of keeping it registered as a historic vehicle.
Plans for your Cruiser: Meeting other 4x4 enthusiast and do some off road near Barcelona.
4x4 Experience: Not so much actually :)
Anything else you think is interesting or relevant: I've ever wanted to own an 80's 4x4. I fell in love with the 70 Series from Toyota Land Cruiser. After a few years of research and savings, now this baby it's mine!

Hello Coco and welcome...

We're down in Granada province and when we registered our 40 series it was deemed to be too modified to go on historic plates but also down here you have to have another vehicle and are limited to 5000 kms per year, so that didn't work for us.

Your 70 looks good.

There is an off road group north of Barcelona and a couple of their members are based out of Euro 4x4 which is also a good place to find parts.

Regards,

Rodger

Hi Mario,

Welcome to Land Cruiser Club. Love the jeep. This is what I've found out since I got mine.

Restrictions on modifications will be related to roadworthiness for legal and insurance purposes. For obvious reasons, any mods can change the functionality, safety and performance of the vehicle. If you're going to use it on the road, and you'll want to - as often as you can, best keep it legal.

Get hooked up with people that know what they're doing. This will get you into shit faster than it will get you out of it. Check out youtube and if you can, do a short offroad course with an instructor. Remember safety first.

Also, you don't have to put the truck through extreme conditions to enjoy it.

Watch the steering, it has a completely different feel and does not steer like an modern car. Get it wrong on a bend and it will scare the crap out of you.

Get to know your truck and treat it gently until you do. It's nearly 40 years old and somethings are going to break.

If you're looking at keeping it original and retaining the value of the vehicle, go with genuine Toyota parts. For some reason, parts on this truck are hard to source and not always available (I've had no luck at all with Euro 4x4, found them impossible to work with). When you can't get new parts, look for good used parts at car breakers or as a last resort you'll have to repair what you have.

Unless you're a mechanic, or handy, get someone who knows about this truck. If you can, find a local Toyota dealer who will help you, or seek out an ex Toyota master tech who worked on this vehicle 30 years ago and knows it well. Fixing this is going to fuck with your mind. Be patient!

At the very least, before you start driving her, service the vehicle. Replace all the fluids. Do a vehicle health check, and check all your systems, especially your cooling, fueling and brakes. Also check the tyres are in good order and keep an eye on the body for rust. When she's running well, she is sweet as can be, but when she's not, she'll break your heart. Don't give up on love.

Keep on truckin'.
