I have a 2004 Land Cruiser with 303,000 miles on it. Yesterday the Toyota dealership told me they found coolant leaking from the head gasket. I am torn as to what to do. Should I repair it, put in a rebuilt engine, or sell it as is? I absolutely love this vehicle and hate the thought of getting rid of it. I have always maintained it at the dealership for over 20 years. I need advise if the repair is worth it? They will be removing the cylinder heads and replace the head gaskets. I have never had any major engine work done on it, because it runs great. I also thought of buying another used Land Cruiser. I am not a fan of the new models. There are too many computerized components and they scare me.

A 100-series cruiser is always worth repairing, it's just to find an affordable way to do it with a long lasting result. I suppose it's a V8 gas engine, which I don't know well. There is a reason for blowing the head gaskets, often because of a coolant leak somewhere. Don't now if those heads are likely to be warped as a result of overheating. Maybe you can find a local Land Cruiser enthusiast mechanic to look at it. My experience is that most garages, (especially dealers') don't know the Land Cruiser well, and often make more money by selling you a new car.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don't .

Take it from the main stealers to a garage that doesn't advertise but struggles to find room for new customers .

Contact "The Car Care Nut". He's on utube. He's ex Toyota and now self employed just working Toyotas. He'll soon tell you whether it's worth changing the head gaskets. I think on the later V8's the heads warp. I think the heads warp leading to leaking gaskets. He has piles of old head gaskets. You're right about the new cars. WHEN the screen goes the car is undriveable because most features are lost. Then it's thousands to change the screen. Most electrical components have to be coded to the car so it's main dealer only. No plug and play.

Phone the NUT and let us know.
