6 speed gearbox conversion

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone knows if you could bolt on a 120 6 speed manual box onto the back of a 1hdt?? It probably isn’t a direct fit and lots of messing around, but my other option is a 5 speed auto from a later 100 series. Car is currently an early 12v with 4 speed auto. Just a thought and putting it out there to see.
Thank you
Henry

Have often thought about a 6 speed conversion for the 1HDT.

I came across the H152 a while ago and seems a decent compromise and much easier than doing a complete gearbox swap from another manufacturer. But have seen a fair few people putting versions of the ZF 6HP behind them. I have one in my bmw 530 and it's a lovely gearbox would work great in an 80.

I'm sure I saw some guys near me, Hereford area what had fitted one. Will see if I can find them.

This thread had some good reading on it.

That’s an interesting article thank you for sharing. I was initially thinking of the 6 speed manual I have in my 120, could be quite cool. Then also the auto in the 150 and look at something like what Wholsale autos do in Oz, except they use the 100 series 5 speed. None of this would be cheap of course, could be fun though. My thoughts being at least if it’s Toyota then it’s fixable in remote areas, probably kidding my self there.

It's all possible what ever route you go. Manual conversion are probably easier as it's mainly just a conversion plate that you'll need to go between the bell housing and the engine, and possibly a custom flywheel.

What engine is in the 120?

It’s the 3.0L. 247,000 miles and it’s still going strong.

I suppose I’m thinking that a manual conversion is fairly straight forward with limited or no electrics involved. Looking at the more interesting autos they have ecu’s to keep them working, which could be a recipe for problems.

Essentially yes, as an Auto will need the mechanical adaptations and the electronic ones to make it all play together.

But modern autos are very good and work so well.

But to keep it simple using the manual box and its transfer would be the easier of the 2 options.

I've not come across the box out of the 120 being used in an 80. I wonder if it's not deemed 'strong enough'

Yes that was my concern too. Isn’t the H152 out of them though?? Anyway, it’s pie in the sky right now but I might put some research into it. Also then need to choose which way to go as the auto is great in sand and off road too.

Yes, a modern auto un my eyes is better than a manual. Crawling up a rocky hill will be much easier with the auto. There are decent stand alone management for the 6HP and the like.

@LandcruisingFarmer ....
In my eyes the ultimate would be a set up like the old 1255 and 1455 Internationals had and the "turbo matic " Fendt's too from the same era .....
Manual G Box with a torque convertor in the drive line ;-) it would give that auto like pull away under load but be as efficient as a manual when the TC is locked .
6 speed manual conversion for closer ratio's or a higher top gear ? I often go for 6th in my 80 and TBH running 33's with a manual box it's over geared in 1st especially pull away when towing loaded.... turbo clutch would be awesome at that point ;-)

Yes for me having 6th to drop the revs down while on the motorway would be ideal.

What you describe would be great, super easy pull away...

Nice idea! A few reasons really for the 6 speed idea. Yes better take off, yes better economy on the m’way and just because 6 speeds are better than 5 . Also, I haven’t seen it though there could be loads of reasons why not! It just tickled my fancy when I was running through ideas and I love the re-built ‘box in my 120. So basically nothing other than vanity and “Can it be done?” For fun!
