Hi guys, all good down here thanks. :flags-australia:
Apologies for the long time with no update, life has been crazy busy and I don't get on here very often anymore. :shifty:
I got the engine conversion in the Hilux finished at the start of September.
1KZ going in.
I got lots of new...
Thanks guys.
Time for an update............
Car Port.
I built the carport and the Hilux proved invaluable.
I bought a fancy new saw.
Dyna-bolted a joist to the house wall giving a nice fall.
Then came out from that with level joists/rafters.
I fixed galvanised shoes...
Thanks guys.
Somehow I managed to post that update on the wrong thread.
That was meant to be in my LJ70 build thread, so I'm just trying to move it across now.
I do have an update for this thread though which I will try and get up soon. :icon-cool:
Thanks Graeme.
Little update time................
So I had a busy 10 days at home between my last hospital chemo admission and this one.
Patio.
The first day home from my last admission and Sam had gone down for this mid day nap and Bec and I decided to go and use the...
Thanks Clive.
I tried taking it easy and spent 2 days doing nothing when I last got out of hospital but I found it really depressing as it gave me too much time to think and dwell on the fact I was only half way through the treatment and still had another 3.5 months of chemo and...
Radiator Cowl and Viscous Fan.
So years ago I stupidly sold the genuine KZJ70 radiator cowl I had as I was running a body lift and so it wouldnt fit (radiator mounts to body and so goes up with a body lift).
I'd been running an alluminium cowl I knocked together years ago but I was never...
Thanks guys.
Thanks Gary.
No limit on miles its days.
You can choose 45 days or 90 days. If you choose 45 and its not enough you can buy another 45.
I've currently got the 2 LandCruisers on 45 days each and the Hilux on 90.
This is what the inside of the log book looks like and...
Thanks guys.
Apologies for the slow reply/update. The treatment has been going well, still no sign of any cancer remaining/come back and the doctors are all very impressed and happy with my progress.
I'm almost half way through the intensive chemo/blinotumomab stage now. I've got...
Hi Jozef, I can confirm that all the inner aches have those humps, the ones with and without dual batteries.
Fingers crossed you can find a battery tray. :icon-biggrin:
Thanks John, you too mate. :icon-biggrin:
Hi Jozef, Thanks. I must get another update up soon as I’ve done a few bits on my LJ78 lately.
That second tray is standard on 70’s that got the winter pack which included 2 starting batteries, heated fuel filter and headlight washers.
There’s quite a few LJ and KZJ 70’s in NZ so I’d imagine...
Thanks mate.
I'm now into my 4th week in hospital and the doctors are amazed at my progress and how well my body has responded. They can't believe it!
The cancer is affectively all gone, my bone marrow is functioning great and all my blood cell counts are healthy and normal and they...
Thanks guys, definitely 100%.
I'm taking so many positives from this experience, it really has been life changing and I know the lives of me and my family are going to improve so much because of it! I feel on top of the world! :icon-biggrin:
I'm also no longer dreading the week of...
Thanks guys!
Can you believe it's 3 weeks today since I got admitted and diagnosed, the time has flown by! :wtf:
Having family and friends visit everyday has really helped!
The last dose of chemo knocked me around a bit for a few days but I've got over that now and even...
Well guys I hope you're sitting down for this tale and apologies it's so long winded..............
I've been dealt a bit of a curve ball. :|
I went to Tasmania for Christmas and had a great week relaxing with my wife's side of the family, it was great! :character-smurfpap:
Got home and for...
:laughing-rolling:
Yeah Loanna was the girl I bought the Hilux from. :romance-hearteyes:
Sorry Rich, no more babies yet. But hopefully we may have another one this year. :shifty:
Thanks guys, I'm really pleased with all my progress.
Unfortunately I don't have any pics of Loanna.:icon-redface:
Regarding the accent..............
I don't think I will ever sounds fully Australian or fully British and will remain trapped in the middle!
Aussies...
LJ
Last but by no means least LJ!
It was over 3 years since I took LJ off the roads and started the big rebuild with new body and V8 engine conversion. :shifty:
After spending the last year working as an auto electrician I now felt confident enough to tackle the wiring. :icon-twisted:
After...
I was really pleased with how the tub and rear suspension was now looking. :icon-biggrin:
And having a headboard will be very useful when carrying long items like the 6 meter lengths of pipe for the garden. :icon-cool:
I turned it around to change the front suspension.
It all went...
As some of you may know I've always dreamed about owning a Mid Night Blue VDJ79 duel cab 70 series. :romance-hearteyes:
And I had been saving up to buy one with the idea to save up $30k to pay for all the mods and then get the $65k cost of the cab chassis vehicle on finance. :shifty:
And then...
All was going well until I hit our sewer main!
It didnt take long for me to repair and lower it.
And digging could resume!
With the digging done we could jump back in the other machine to spread it all around and move a few more loads up the hill side.
This has given me a...
Thanks guys.
Apologies for the long time between updates, I've been very busy working on the house, garden and fleet of Toyota's + my part time job at Piranha. :shifty:
The Garden
I finished the wall going around the corner and up the hill. :icon-cool:
I picked up a trailer...
Hi Luis,
1KZ-T 3 litre turbo diesel would be a good choice.

Fire Wood
With our supply of fire wood getting low and a few months of cold weather ahead we headed back to the forest to get some more wood.
Panel Work.
On the previous High Country trip I stupidly reversed into a tree, which dented my bumper and pushed it into the body a bit...
Thanks. :icon-biggrin:
We thought about that but then when its going slowly or was just sitting in the water it sat nice and level, it was only at speed that it was leaning.
The trim tabs have fixed it perfectly though!
The fuel tank runs across the hull so is nice and balanced. :thumbup...
High Country Trip
I went on a High Country trip with one of the other clubs I'm in, for their annual Boys Weekend. After having spent the last year or 2 having girls along for most of the trips it was nice to have a weekend without any!
We base camped at a bush block that one of the members...
A few months ago I went out for a day drive on my own in search if snow.
I found a bit and also got a load of fire wood so it was a great day. :icon-biggrin:
After that I had a day trip with one of the 4wd clubs I'm in, to Mount Disappointment.
This is called Triton hill...
Air Boat
Lots has been happening on the airboat since my last update and it really became a tale of tragedy and triumph!
We took it for testing again, this time with the new wider, curvier front and it got up and planed perfectly!
But we found it was now torque steering where...
Work continued digging and leveling my way along.
And the rock pile continued to grow.
I bought some bar chairs.
Tie wires and I knew this old tool I've been carrying around for the past 15 years and never needed, would be needed one day!
I cut some mesh, laid it on the bar chairs...
Long time no update...........................
LJ
I brought back some more carpet for LJ when I was in the UK a few months ago.
This time I managed to find the pieces that cover the rear wheel arches out of a KZJ70.
They finish it off nicely.
So its just the boot carpet I need now and...
Thanks guys.
This is the first time I've turned my laptop on for months.
I've been spending every spare minute in the garden trying to fix the mess I made of it. :shifty:
I completely overlooked the fact that the ground would be far too wet in the middle of winter to dig and...
I'm really not sure Rich. :icon-redface:
My 70 was brought in as a personal import, where as an overlander would want to bring their vehicle in on a temporary import permit.
Give me a shout if you need a hand down here Olazz, I know a good bonded warehouse where you can take it out of...
We loaded the airboat onto the trailer behind the 200 and towed it up to my bosses farm a few hours north of Melbourne.
We then hooked the trailer up behind one of his 60's and took it to the lake for testing.
My charismatic boss said a quick piece to camera.
Unfortunately things...
I've been busy working away in the garden.
I decided to change my plans slightly and decided rather than demolishing the old garage pad to continue the driveway down, I would keep it and open up where the other driveway originally went down the garden and then rather than build the garage down...
I've finally found/made some time to work on LJ!
As I'm getting close to the wiring stage I moved my work benches over a bit so that I could move LJ over in order to be able to fully open all the doors.
The 1UZ sump was an issue as it was very close to the front diff and prop...
Thanks guys.
No Stu, I hadnt. But we actually found the steering works amazingly well and the boat will turn on the spot! :o
I will get an update up soon as we did a water test then brought it back and have had to make some changes. :icon-cool:
The tyres on The 78 were the cheap, Chinese made tyres that came on the car over 2 years ago and they were knackered! :shifty:
So I needed to order some new ones.
In the past I've had KM2's and they are a great tyre but............
For some one like me who does very few miles per year they...
2 days of resting later and it was time to head to the High Country for another 4wd/camping trip!
The clutch peddle was a bit difficult to press as it hurt my muscle, but we pushed on to Bright.
On the way we stopped at my favourite bakery in Australia.
Eggs Benedict.
We...
I finally got my 78 on historic registration, which brings my registration (road tax) down from $850 a year to $75 and reduced my insurance premium and excess massively!
It does restrict me to only being able to drive it 45 days a year, although I can pay another $75 and get another 45...
Thanks Rich, I will give them a call.
That all very interesting Rob.
Do people not correct the rear wheel track over there?
I know sand is the one area where its most noticeable as the rear wheels dont follow the ruts made by the fronts!
Hi Iwan,
I've only just spotted this thread..........
I dont get on here much anymore. :|
Wow you've been busy! It looks very different to when I saw it last year in your barn! :wtf:
I've just read the entire thread, great work!!!
Hoping to get out with Matt on another trip...
Thanks Rich.
We're really lucky with our neighbours, they're both great and both LandCruiser families!
One side is an older couple with 4 grown up daughters and lots of grandkids. Hes a retired carpenter who used to own an 80 series and now owns a tricked up 200 series...
Air Boat Build
I built a structure in the centre of the hull to add a lot of strength and to help tie the sides of the boat together, but also for the front seats to mount onto, with storage below.
I added some checker plate and then bolted on some stainless steel hinges.
And folded...
Thanks mate.
I'm really pleased with it and as I did everything myself, from plumbing, electrics, tiling, plastering, painting and obviously the carpentry, we saved quite a bit of money.
Long time no update.......................
The kitchen is 99% finished and I've now decorated the lounge and kitchen. :icon-cool:
And tinted all the windows with mirror tint, no horrible net curtains here! :shifty:
I think its come up alright for an $800 second hand kitchen...
Thanks Rob.
Its difficult to say at the moment because my tyres are so bald and shredded! Once I fit new tyres then I will be able to get a better comparison between The 78 and Jiri's 76.
But so far we havent found anything that one of us could drive but the other couldnt...
So 2 Saturdays ago we went to explore a local state forest 40 minutes drive from my house for a day drive, an area we havent been before.
The map said there were some short difficult tracks around and they didnt disappoint.
Both 70's needed front and rear lockers to get to the top of the...
I cant argue with that Rich. :icon-neutral:
I printed off that Optima document from your link, highlighted the bit about the charge voltage of yellow tops and took it in to my manager today. :shifty:
He said that the vehicle charge voltage of 14.2-15v is the optimum charge voltage, under...
Thanks Rich.
I put what you said to my manager who has spent the last 40+ years in the automotive battery industry and he said that what you have said is incorrect and AGM batteries will start accepting charge from 13.5v and he has a load of graphs showing this from tests that have...
