Only reference I can see to Mle refers to model i.e. Mle - Modèle or "Model" followed by the design year. Used in designations for shells, cartridges, guns and mountings. Any help?

Good quality chains will not snap and are unlikely to damage anything if they're fitted properly and you only use them when needed (i.e. when you're actually on snow - drive more than a few hundred yards on open tarmac and you may well snap or damage them). But they aren't cheap. Look at Pewag...

TBH I'm not sure I'd trust any of these "flush" type services. If the engine is healthy it seems unnecessary, and if the engine is knackered then I can't see how flushing stuff through it would make any material difference, and as Steve says, you risk displacing something you don't want to!

TBH most snorkels are purely for show anyway - very few people run their trucks in 3 feet plus of water. Unless you're planning on competition work I'd just refit it and forget about it.

HI and welcome. When we had the bodywork restored on our 80 we just deleted those moldings completely and had the holes welded over - looks much cleaner than stock. Just a thought...

How hot does the actual unit get when its running?? I'm maybe being paranoid but I'm not sure about having a plastic fuel tank sat next to the heater... or does it stay pretty cool in there? Otherwise that looks tidy :cool:

I'd echo what's been said already - its rougher than our one, but not horrible - almost certainly salvageable, but definitely needs work. If you don't fancy doing it yourself I reckon you'll be looking at a grand or so to get this cleaned up and see what's there. Else its a couple of weekends...

Nice. BTW looping buggy cords around the chains helps to keep everything taught and reduces the risk of a thrown chain - super cheap insurance policy. Discovered that one doing the French comp stuff in the Alps.

What I would say is, if you are going anywhere with serious snow, bring chains. Winter spec tyres will only get you so far - a good set of chains (Pewag cross chains or similar, not the crap Halfords ones) will work wonders and give amazing traction.

Update: no further issues, even when left parked up for a week or more, including during the recent ice and snow, so I think we're all good - just a dodgy (and aged) battery! All the best guys (and Merry Christmas!).

Maybe go via the ombudsman too? The more people that do that, the more chance they'll need to take action? Just a thought...

Aha, that explains the issue I had then Andy!

Didn't buy this one, but did buy another copy pattern exhaust for our 80 off e-bay a few years ago. It fit fine, but the rear mount was incorrect - it routed on the opposite side of the rear chassis leg, compared to the previous one. We cut off and realigned the rear mount and it fitted...

Depends entirely on the policy Shayne. Most policies used to allow you to drive any vehicle not belonging to you on third party cover only, but its not always the case, especially on specialist policies.

What lift are you running? A lot of us are running about on +2" without correction brackets.

Have you recently changed the oil? Our 24v picked up a "tick" with one brand of oil, its been documented on here a few times, went away when we changed to a different oil.

Agree on the advisory point, Andy - I worry about owners that seem to just fire their vehicles into the MOT and fix only what's needed to get a pass... what does that say about their ongoing maintenance?

I did exactly the same thing on mine when trying to identify a driveline issue, Andy - removed the front prop and engaged CDL. Frankly it was bloody horrible to drive and I couldn't wait to get it back to normal. Which is a bit confusing as I've driven plenty of other 4x4s that are RWD only on...

Fair comment - though on a lot of ex military stuff (with KM speedos) the MOT histories regularly get confused over miles vs KMs.

The car market doesn't seem to make much sense sometimes, the point re Defender prices and Disco prices being a classic example of two vehicles with very similar underpinnings... one is now trendy and has a cult following, the other does not... and this is reflected in the prices...

That seems cheap, especially as the MOT history is pretty decent....

Have you checked the output from the alternator on idle? Per Dave2000's point, the new alternator might just be a bit weedy...?
