Replacement key or lock for the rear wheel cover?

I’m getting the truck ready for a trip to France in two weeks time, and going through the list of jobs to do I’ve realised that I don’t have a key for the rear wheel cover for my spare wheel. I never got them with the truck, didn’t even think about it. I’ve looked at the lock and can’t see a...

Random "pogo-ing" from the rear suspension - completely intermittent

I think I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but right now I've been told by the wife we're going on holiday in October and we're driving. My truck needs to behave, so other than a timing belt change I really do need to address an intermittent problem I'm having with the rear. This first...

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

They have. They identified that two seals going in to the condenser needed changing. That's been done, and over the 2 weeks the gas gradually escaped somewhere else. They've not identified any sort of UV leak since that. I'm wary of things like that, especially when the leak itself hasn't been...

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

It’s a slow leak which is the main problem. I saw them Wednesday and they were in the middle of doing it again. They have a Snap On sniffer tool thing and they’re putting it everywhere apparently and it’s not registering a leak. Anywhere. But it is leaking. So I told them to change the seals...

    Timing belt change

Is it easy enough to differentiate which of the pumps you need? I need to get this all done this month but outsourcing it to a mechanic and I'm supplying the bits.

    Don't miss Monday.

It would. Billions of roubles of improvements would be had. I don't think it's worth it personally.

    Air suspension anomaly

I think in terms of the air bags it'll be fairly easy to see if they're knackered or not. Just stick your head under and have a look. Other way would be to stand at the back of the truck and see if you can hear the compressor engaging. If it is, and it's on for ages and nothing is happening...

    Air suspension anomaly

I'm not sure myself. From memory of the bit of an explanation I had is that it stops the suspension either going too tall or too small, and it can break so that the suspension has no real restriction in height. That's only a guestimate though

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

I wish he was in the West Midlands! My 120 is currently in the garage for the 4th working day trying to work out where the leak is on my system.

    Air suspension anomaly

Could be sensors @msalmanmasood or it could be some tie rod things which I'm told can break and cause erratic behaviour.

After market parking sensors for 2004 J120

I seen somewhere (I think it's a brochure) that the 120 from 2007 had the reverse camera option and it would appear on the sat nav screen. I wonder if that's something that can be retrofitted...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

Can confirm that the diesel was the issue. I filled it from a half tank with the usual Sainsbury's stuff, and the full tank returned 28.5mpg. So I'm happy(!) there is no issue with the engine or the running.

    Brazil

I've a vague memory of them saying that it came from another South American country, not Brazil. But it was also nothing like what he ordered. OP, you thought about importing it?

    Self locking query

This. I have this issue, and realised it was the door switch. I open it and wiggle it a bit until I see the door open light on the dash, hold it a second or two, then just leave it. Doing that stops the car auto locking. Of course I have a door switch to go on the car, but I’ve not found the...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I don’t think it’s tyre pressures, they’ve been fairly constant. I am inclined to think the 24mpg has come from poor quality diesel. I’ve done 142 miles of my usual mixed driving and I’ve about used a quarter tank. I had used half a tank with the 168 miles I did previously.

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

Most of it has really been from my home to work and back again, the driving hasn't really been any different. Air con - for now at least, let's see in 2 weeks - was only fixed on Monday. So I don't think that would account for the 5mpg drop.

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I’ve done a fair bit of driving. Normal bit of driving first since the last update, and it returned 29mpg. Great. So a few weeks ago I did a trip to Heathrow from Stourbridge, constant speed of 60mph, and I swear I was getting high 30’s. After 500 miles on the tank, I filled up on the 25th...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

He’s in Cyprus, so if you fancy a holiday… The cleaning of the throttle body and EGR are fairly easy. Just get £10 of petrol and a tooth brush and get the crud off. My main issue with the EGR was the plume of black smoke I’d have under acceleration, along with a dirty rear sooty bumper. Since...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

Realised I’ve not checked the oil on this since I did the injectors, and I went out to check it this evening. I also turned the fuel trim down to 5% just to see what difference in driving I’ll feel in that 2% - if any. It’s not used any oil as far as I can tell. I was about to close the bonnet...

    Bio fuel, good or bad?

Didn't Top Gear take a diesel BMW around Silverstone running on biodiesel, and the fuel system started leaking because their version was so aggressive that it caused leaks throughout the system?

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I was in a rush when I wrote that, but wanted to jot it down. That's after 300 miles of my usual mixed driving. So about 450 miles since the ECU was reset. It's acceptable, I need to remind myself that when I fill up! Did that yesterday and thought "christ this isn't the right car for the times...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

So at this fill up (£86 for 44 litres) I’ve managed to do 28mpg. Slight decrease, but it’s had the battery removed/disconnected so may have affected the ECU as it relearns everything.

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I mean, it's daft. It's dafter than the center console bin on the Peugeot 3008 which opens towards the driver - as they couldn't be bothered to swap the hinge around from the LHD models. That can't have been the best solution to that problem?

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

No idea if I'm honest, I'm assuming that's the case. I got to the car and saw that the mileage was showing. I never drive a car with that showing (if it's digital), I prefer to have an odometer so I can see how many miles I've done since getting fuel. When I went to put it on the odometer it...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

My 120 finally got to the mechanic today, alternator swapped out and it's back working again. I think the battery has been disconnected during the change as I've lost my odometer reading, but it was at 133 miles when I dropped it to him. So the test continues!

    Running on cooking oil

Every time I think about it I always google it, and this always comes up: Toyota Landcruiser Veg Oil Car - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club] But that requires some sort of conversion for it to work. You just can't mix it with petrol and put it in the fuel tank, or on your chips.

Well for extra jeopardy, I had the baby in the back with me. That's why I couldn't turn the radio off as he'd wake up. Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

About 15 miles from home. I’ve not tried it since. Been given the number to a 4x4 garage near me and just going to book it in and get it done. I can change an alternator, but the day(s) I’ve agreed with the wife for me to dick about with cars this week was to break the MG that’s sat on the...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

Well I am 127 miles on from the last post, and it drives differently. There is more power, it feels more eager. It’s driving well. To be fair she's never driven it, and she's not keen on it as it's too big for her apparently. Even though she kept telling me she'd rather I had a Range Rover so she could have a go in it. And it's funny what @TonyP said about his mrs and the Tesla being too techy for her, I got hold of a...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

It'd be interesting to know what it's like, especially as it's gone so long without throwing a code? She'd rather I didn't have it, but it's been in the garage for a while and she doesn't see it. So I think she's forgotten how woeful it is. She did show some interest in it a few months ago...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I took it that the screws had to be drilled out, so I drilled mine out as well. I didn't think it could be unscrewed, as a loose screw would end up being sucked in to the engine. It wasn't at all difficult to be honest, drill out the screws then tap the plate out. I had my throttle body apart...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

I think it makes a difference to the responsiveness of the pedal. Like a light tap on the pedal causes an immediate noticeable response on the engine. It makes it feel like there’s more power but there can’t be that much improvement. I think, given the cost of it, it’s worth giving it a go. It...

I am not one who makes life easy for themselves, and often if I'm doing one job on a car I'll see if there is anything else that could be done while I'm at it. That works out for me sometimes (like it has with this thread), or it bites me on the arse (like when I went to repair the subframe of...

    Injector Swap

Thanks all! My hair was thinning before the work, I definitely think I've a solar panel on my head now! Everything, so far, is fine. It's driving well, no black smoke at all now and I dare say the MPG's are getting better too (although there's more to that which I'll go in to in a separate...

    Injector Swap

Rightio well so - bolted everything back on to the engine. Plastic shroud and all! Fired straight up, and it’s much quieter now. Not the bag of spanner’s it once was! Didn’t have to clear any codes, simply putting everything back together resolved that. Gave it a bit of a rev, sounds great to...

I’ve oil in the engine now, most of the things are hooked up except the intercooler. I wanted to have as much on as needed but still be able to see if I had any diesel leaks from the injectors. Not so fussed with the washer, as people reckon you're meant to change them after every service. I've never done that on any of the cars I've had. I was swearing more when I realised the clamp went missing! Fantastic! Cheers.
