    N4 Works winch plate

Hello Mick I have one, but I have only got as far as fitting the brackets, then ran out of enthusiasm! As far as I can remember, after removing the crush cans off the chassis rails and mounting the brackets on, the winch plate does protrude forward enough that the stock bumper would likely need...

Cooling mods for 1998 Prado Turbo Diesel 3.0 1KZ-TE

There was no fear of it being anywhere near full Tractionman, there wasn't much to start with. At least it now has one bottles worth of the correct fluid in there. Hopefully, it will help.

Who is doing what maintenance today?

I popped off the viscous fan clutch from my 1KZ-TE at the weekend to see how much oil was present. The fan is only about a year old, but when I opened it up, there wasn't a lot of oil to be seen, so I added some more for good measure.

Cooling mods for 1998 Prado Turbo Diesel 3.0 1KZ-TE

A few years ago, while on a trip in the Pyrenees mountains, we almost cracked the head due to overheating (the ambient temperatures at the time were 42°C/107°F). Fortunately, I managed to get home to the UK intact. After poking around in the engine bay a bit, I removed the original viscous fan...

    Which ATF do you use?

I've just done mine for the second time in three weeks, just to try to make sure there is more new fluid than old. Around 2.5l comes out each time. I just fill through the dip stick with a funnel jamed in the top. No problems.

Genuine Toyota Long Life 'Red' Coolant vs Aisin's Ultra Long Life 'Blue' Coolant

I’ve just been looking at the RoughTrax website and at the differences between the ‘Genuine Toyota Long Life "RED" Coolant’, and the ‘Aisin's Ultra Long Life Blue Coolant’. Both are compatible with my vehicle (KZJ95R-1KZTE), though the Aisin’s version is quite significantly cheaper. However...

    Can’t undo top shock nut

@Kdawg19 Some 90's have a small hole sealed with a rubber bung in the floor pan of the rear cargo area, located above the rear strut nut, to allow for easy access. Could be easier to see if you have that before getting too jiggy with it. I don't know if all 90's have them.

SERVO SUB-ASSY, DAMPER, Genuine Toyota 87106-35040

So, I know this little black box as a 'temperature control unit', at least that is what I call it. In the 6 or so years that I have owned my Toyota, it has never worked. This means that to adjust the cabin temperature, I’ve had to manipulate the wire cable that attaches to the arm on the servo...

Terraclean. Has anyone tried it in their diesel?

Hi @Shayne Cheers for the reply. I was more interested in whether there were any noticeable differences. I've been itching to remove my manifold to give it a clean out, and was getting lazy thinking that terraclean may save me the trouble of removal. Edd China has a video endorsing the product...

Terraclean. Has anyone tried it in their diesel?

Hello fellow owners. Has anyone had any terraclean treatment on their 90, or any other diesel car that they own? If so, has there been any noticeable difference, improvements etc? Do you believe that the cost is worth the treament? Cheers.

    Power steering noise

@larryseaman It won't help you much, but my power steering has had a bit of a groan going on for a few years now. It first appeared during some very hot weather in the Pyrenees (around 40 degrees), and has never gone away. Touch wood, other than the groan, I have not noticed any negative issues.

    Bigger tire size

@Brecht Hi Brecht. It's all personal choice, but after running 265/75's for a few years, I'm going back to 265/70's when my current KO2's run out. This is because I am trying to save every penny when it comes to fuel these days, and in my tiny mind I am thinking that wider tyres need more fuel...

Swapping out square headlights for round ones.

Hi @MikeJak My old Prado doesn't have the adjustable lights, but removing the old square lights and putting the round ones in was no bother. Without touching them at all, the round ones slipped straight in, no re-aligment necessary with the ones I received (mine is right hand drive). Nayab is a...

Finally, it has reared its ugly head! Rust.

Well, I supose that it was inevitable at some point. When I was cleaning out the rear upper shock mounts the other day using an air line, it blew out the rust and dirt ok, oh, and some of the metal! I am now hoping that it won't cost the earth to rectify......

Swapping out square headlights for round ones.

I have always preferred the look of round headlights over the square ones on the 90/95 series, so when the opportunity to get a set popped up, I decided to take it. They were extremely easy to install, tasking less than an hour to swap over. I am pleased with the look.

What springs and shocks for SWB 90?

I fitted Peddars to my LWB about four years ago. The ride is very stiff unloaded, but as others have mentioned, the paint finish is less than appalling. Most of the paint, which I presume should be powder-coated, was flaking off within 12 months. For reference, I had my wheels powder coated...

    Front Wheel Bearing Change

Hello good people. Back in July my nearside front wheel bearing started to deteriorate quite quickly, finally becoming unbearable (no pun intended) on a laning trip around Suffolk. It was time to sort it out. I contacted my usual garage to see if they would give me a quote to do the work...

Hole in rear silencer what to replace?

I've had a small hole in my rear silencer (sounds dodgy) for a few years now, but I plugged it with J-B Weld Putty reinforced with a little stainless mesh, and a spray over with galvafroid spray. It's held for longer thatn I ever thought, and it has not been picked up on two subsequesnt MOT's so...

98 Prado very oily from inlet side of intercooler

Hello Grimbo. Is this the area that the oil is showing up, at the bottom of the black pipe? I get a bit of oil pooling up at the bottom of mine, but it's not a lot, not often, and seems only to occur when I've been doing long trips on very warm days. I did remove the intercooler some time ago...

    Hot weather and head gaskets

Part of the system in the coolant chat that often gets forgot about (in autos anyway) is flushing and changing the transmission fluid as it feeds into the radiator. Then of course making sure the viscous fan has sufficient fluid. It was a failing fan that almost did it in for my engine.

    1KZ-TE versus D4D?... 90 Series versus LC4?...

For my sins I have a KZJ95W-1KZTE. I am not a mechanic by any means, but I do whatever work that I can do myself on the car, which is a fair amount. This has been interesting. My wife has a Toyota Rav 4 that will not start when hot. She has to wait 20-25 minutes for it to cool down before it's even worth attempting to start it again. She basically has to plan every journey around this issue, and God forbid stalling the vehicle in the road...

1KZ-TE AC Compressor bearing replacement kit

Hi MODVRS...... Thanks for your input. If you can remember, is there a sealed bearing race of some description in the magnetic clutch? I think that's the bit making a bit of noise. What Chris said really. If I remember, it's a case of holding down the two buttons on the front simultaneously until the compass flashes, and then driving a figure of eight. It usually orientates without having to do the figure of eight though I have found.
