Im sure this will probably be the thousandth posty on electric windows (for HD80/HDJ81) as they absolutely suck when they get old. Ive tried everything to get the them working, lubricating the runners and rubber seals along the window, which only lasts a few months. Now im thinking it would be...
Thanks everyone for you feedback, I have read through every one of them and its certainly food for thought. The first thng is to get it properly diagnosed and then go from there. I like the idea of WINK but how come they dont post their prices on their website. Always a bit suspeicous of that...
Right enough, id better drop it down to the local, car doctor to get it diagnosed properly before spending a load on a new Turbo. ALtghjough I am secretly hoping it is the Turb so I have an excuse to buy a decent one :-)
Hi everyone,
So travelling up to Stratford the other weekend and my friend tells me that the old LC is blowing a lot of blue smoke whilst I’m accelerating past lorries or going uphill, its hardly noticable when ticking over. So, I’m guessing the oil seals have gone on the Turbo. Fair enough...
Yeah me too, its taken me two years to get this far but at least everything mechanical is now finished, just need the final external bits and pieces. :-)
Thanks Rich, I think we spoke about mine kst year. It is made from black steel Is a single winch bar with winch slot. It petrudes around 6 inches and I think it’s home made although couldn’t swear to that. I’ll bring the whole lot up to the show as it’s still bolted to my cruiser at the mo.
Hi All, just putting the feelers out for anyone who may have a decent second hand Winch Bar for sale. Will be at the Stafford show so if going would be a bonus. Like the look of Iron man or similar, black and sturdy rather than soft and shiny as its for an overland vehicle. Howling Moon roof...
They are very hit unpredictable these MOT places, mine passed a few months back. The window wiper rubbers were hanging off, I have very bright LED lights all around and I'm sure the speedo wasn't working then. I at least expected a telling off!
Hey Star Cruiser, you are based near me, I'm in Brighton. Are you the guy that fits those nice rear windows, if so you showed me around them at the Stratford show last year.
Hey all, thanks for the replies, it looks to me like it will be harder than I first thought. Oh well, the cluster only cost £35 on eBay, I didn't inadvertently buy it from you did I Karl? When it gets here Ill swap it over and see what it does. The unfortunate things is that without a working...
Hi All,
I have a 1993 4.2 12V HDJ81 and just recently the speedometer and odeometer stopped working. On taking it out I noted some corrosion on the back electronic panel and it had evidentally burnt out. I tried to clean it up and by pass the circuit that had sustained damage but no joy. So...
Thanks Grimbo, the previous owner removed the seats and built and impressive bespoke bed and stroage platform in the rear including making a very tidy job of the electronics with two solid state aircraft batteries for power. He was however a boat builder by trade and made it all out of marine...
Ruts and uneven roads I presume, After a couple of years reading forums and asking questions it seems to be the standard setting for an Africa trip, Maybe that extra 2 inches makes all the difference im unsure but open to all opinions, my guess is it will drop 2 inches when fully loaded.
Thanks Tommy again food for thought, I never had any idea there were so many makes to choose from. OME is the make I see most mentioned, which is what are on her now. But Ill take a closer look at these makes now. Thanks again.
Thanks Mark, ive reconditioned a great deal on her and certainly tried to keep everything factory standard. Ive even ummed and arred about lifting it but I think its the right thing to do for an African trip (East coast - Cape town) A friend of mine did teh same trip a couple of years ago and...
Thanks again, well if you are serious about working on my vehicle, I cant get it to you next week but I can get it to you in a month or so, I have a mate that lives in your neck of the woods I can stay with him. Funnily enough youve worked on it before at the Overland show. When I first bought...
Wow, thanks Chris thats given me food for thought, ive asked the guy to take a look at the struts to see if they are suitable for a lift (as they are relatively new) However I didnt take into account marrying them up with the springs etc. Is theer any chance they´ll be suitable or would you just...
Your 2 bits is apprieciated greatly and as I am trying to keep the weight down, maybe + 250kgs is a better idea, I spoke to someone at the Overland show this year who had no probems overlanding with + 200kgs, thanks Geek! :-)
Happy New year to you all,
this is probably a question that has been asked a thousand times and it difficult to answer but I'm after opinions for the best suspension set up on my 80 for general UK road use but also for a trip down to South Africa. I already have an OME set up but it is...
Thanks for this, it is helpful and building my confidence. My little brother and me have been fixing and replacing parts on all the minor faults on my LC but body and engine are in great condition. I'm finding that after 23 years it is all the rubber, door seals etc which need replacing and...
Ive owned my imported 1993 HDJ81 4.2l for around 4 weeks now, although I have research them solidly for near on 2 years, im loving her atm. There is a lot of enthusiasm here as you can see and plenty of people willing to offer advice. Although I cannot offer any mechanical advice I can tell you...
Hey Chris, thanks again for your help. I was glad to get the thumbs up from you and many of the club members at the weekend, im pretty happy with the 80 and am intent on making her as near perfect as possible so I can reliably on her when I head off the beaten track in a year. I've already...
Thanks StarCruiser for the info. As the engine is the same as the UK model, would it be possible to use UK spec parts so that they could be ordered domestically? If so, who would be best to contact in the UK to source parts?
Many thanks again, Carl
Hello everyone, my name is Carl, I have just joined the forum after meeting some of you at this years 4 x 4 show in Stratford. Thanks to those who gave me invaluable advice about my new purchase (Import 1993 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2 TD) and directed me to this website.
My query is where do I...
