    kzj 73 exhaust, lateral?

Hi all, hope you're all well and dealing with the crazy times ok. The exhaust has gone on my kzj 73 and annoyingly I can only find the silencer boxes for the 70, and it's too small to fit the mountings etc. Have to wait until mid October for correct one with Toyota (and its not cheap)...

    Starter motor whirring whine

Yeah was a total puzzle for a while, thanks for your supplier suggestion I got Simon Holton (such a good guy!) to order a new one last week before I saw this, hopefully will be with me on Thursday so I can reassemble.

    Starter motor whirring whine

Ok so I found the issue in the end. It was quite obvious when looking at part diagrams, but looking at the actual bit the surfaces were worn super smooth so they looked good! These parts of the armature should be attached!

    Starter motor whirring whine

Hi All, hope life is sweet in the Land Cruiser world, long time no problems, but yesterday the truck didn't start. Battery and connections all seem good, the starter motor just makes a whirring sound maybe with a little whine. I've taken the starter motor off and to bits, it was full of...

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

Started first time this morning. I'm going to try to stop asking questions that seem to end with me finding a crappy connection!! I learnt all about glow plugs now though. I hadn't realised they were only required when cold. Thanks guys

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

Voltage readings to the plugs was correct and turning off, so timer and relay are good. Started dismantling to test glow plug resistances and found that the glow plug connector had corroded and even melted the cover a bit, it had worked itself loose. I've sorted that so hopefully that will be...

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

No, problem still exists with new fuel treated to -22 and anti gel. Guess I'm going to have to check the plugs and the relay... I found the diagnosis guide in EG-9. So that's some fun for tomorrow.

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

Thanks, added the anti gel, and got it started. Will see what happens tomorrow morning and take it from there!

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

Cheers for the quick replies! I was hoping to not rip the filter off after it was such a pain to prime last time. However with a full tank it will hopefully be easier to bleed, may try to clamp the feed tube with some molegrips. There's no trap that I can see. I've sent the misses to the...

    Starting issues - Cold, water?

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can help with this issue... Here's the whole story, incase any of these things are related. The car has been doing fine, we've nearly done 1000km since I rebuilt it. I noticed sometimes a slight smell of diesel from the engine, eventually after investigation I...

KZJ 73 turbo pressure sensor - what does it do with the reading?

Pretty sure it's not had an engine swap. I'm not sure about the overboost light, I'll try to look into it a bit more. Thanks for the thoughts!

KZJ 73 turbo pressure sensor - what does it do with the reading?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, but it seems unlikely that Mr T. would put a sensor there that does nothing?

KZJ 73 turbo pressure sensor - what does it do with the reading?

Anyone any idea what the car does with the turbo pressure sensor reading? My sensor connection seems like it was probably broken in the past and doesnt really feel so secure when you put the tube back onto the sensor pin. I can probably glue it, but I'm wondering what the sensor actually...

    KZJ 73 Overheating Issues

So eventually it's all back together and tested. New 76 deg thermostat, 60ml of 7000 cls silicon oil in the fan, resurfaced and pressure tested head. Tested yesterday on a big snowy mountain, got up no bother with a very loaded truck temp gauge didnt go over half. So very pleased with that...

Found the problem, managed to trace it back to a crappy wire. Now to put everything back together and then test! Happy Christmas everyone!

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

Cheers for the comprehensive answers GC_Aus, sorry I missed the first one as I hadn't had caffeine yet. I recon the sender for the oil level is probably damaged, most likely when cleaning the horrible silicone off the sump, There was loads of snow around and I wonder if even theres some...

Sorry for not being clear, the woodruff key was for the head and is just a filler. The plastic clip is the unknown item i found.

    Temperature gauge not moving

So I got the instrument cluster out, it was a right pain on this LHD version, there is a bar in the way where it suggests you put your hand. Managed to get it eventually, not sure how it will go back together :) The back of the panel doesn't match the diagram, if I measure resistance across...

    Bonjour from France

Down in sunny Barcelonnette in the south, it's a magic valley with some stunning scenery I only read about the calendar yesterday, or I could have actually got a camera out and driven to somewhere pretty. Maybe even given it a polish! Next year! Thanks for the welcome :-)

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

The light seems to go on randomly, not related to cornering or hills, or time. Once on it stays on until the ignition is turned off. If I immediately turn off the ignition and on again after the light goes on, it stays off until the next random event. Not sure about the dipstick, it looks...

    Bonjour from France

Hi All, I've been changing the head and sorting other bits and stuff with the help of some of you, thought I should finally put a picture up. Here she is, a 93 KZJ 73, 280,000 kms with the removable roof. I got it last year and have been trying to fix an occasional overheating issue. Now have...

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

From the diagrams I have and my beginner engineer brain, it looks like the oil level light on the KZJ is only a level indicator, there is a separate oil pressure gauge which has no lights. Pressure on the oil gauge is it was before I changed the head (slightly low but ok) checked everything...

    Temperature gauge not moving

Hi All, Back again, I've been loathed to try any big hills yet as the temp gauge is not working and I really can't risk any overheating. So I've measured resistance of the sender, was about 1800Ω at the time and increasing as it was cooling. Voltage across the connector wires is 5V. Earthing...

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

It did cross my mind to take the fuel pump out the saab 900 I have here and do that, but I couldn't be bothered to clear the snow off it, the bike pump option seemed easier. Im thinking about just putting a marine bulb before the filter incase I ever need to do it again (or run out of fuel).

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

For anyones reference it's best to pressurise the return pipe not the tank as otherwise diesel comes out the return pipe, at least on mine. Bloody low oil light has come on now, and it's full of oil. Hopefully the sensor is just busted, otherwise oil isn't getting back into the sump quick...

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

Ok I got it. Covered myself in diesel in the end, the misses was not keen. Made a pump adapter from my syphon tubing (sorry beer making!) and an connector - which I created from one of the kids felt pens. I then connected this to the return pipe (rubber). Mine also went to max revs, I...

thanks for the responses guys, do you know if I can inspect the pump on the filter by simply unscrewing the screw at the top of the button, or does it come out completely?

I've got victims galore, the question is who is better to cover with diesel, the misses or the boy.... :)

Do you have to remove much to get to the return pipe? Also wondering if inner tube cut to cover the filler hole and floor pump will work.

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

This sounds like a really good solution, unfortunately I don't have a compressor. I could use one in a garage if I could drive it. I wonder if I could jimmy something up with 5L big water/coke bottle, floor stand pump and some tubing. What kind of psi do you need to get would you think?

KZJ 73 - Priming fuel / bleeding not working...

Finished putting everything back together and went to prime the system. No amount of pumping on the fuel filter pump seems to work. I decided to change the filter as I had one and I wanted to see the state of the diesel. It was -17c last night and -10 as I was working today. No problem...

    Yeah this is exactly right.

Half moon cap fell in oil hole, grabber or remove pan?

Yeah that's a good question. I know the head's been off before so hopefully it was something that was dropped in, as opposed to something that should be inside the engine. When I got the sump out properly I found another large bit of the same plastic, I suspect there were some bits too to...

KZJ 73 Sump Removal - how?!

Thanks for the replies. I was totally in the middle of it, and you know how it is. It's impossible to stop thinking and trying stuff even after you feel completely stuck. I found (eventually and by accident) that turning the wheels full lock to the right allowed the pan to simply fall out...

KZJ 73 Sump Removal - how?!

Hah I'll just keep on answering my own thread incase it helps anyone in the future. Gently get between the block and the sump as much as you can with a scraper, then some prying with a large thin flathead screwdriver. Retrieved the piece and an extra one. Can't see an easy way to get the...

KZJ 73 Sump Removal - how?!

Did a search on here, but couldn't find anything helpful. Having dropped the aluminium half moon cap into the engine, I'm pretty sure it's dropped a pretty long way down, possibly close to the sump, so I thought I'd try to get sump pan off and take a look. I can get to 20 of the 22 sump bolts...

Half moon cap fell in oil hole, grabber or remove pan?

Thanks for the reply, the cap is aluminium so the magnet is no good, I've drained the oil now, so going to try to take the pan off. Does anyone know if you can just remove the sump pan and it will come out, or do you have to remove other stuff too?
