Voltage readings to the plugs was correct and turning off, so timer and relay are good. Started dismantling to test glow plug resistances and found that the glow plug connector had corroded and even melted the cover a bit, it had worked itself loose. I've sorted that so hopefully that will be...

No, problem still exists with new fuel treated to -22 and anti gel. Guess I'm going to have to check the plugs and the relay... I found the diagnosis guide in EG-9. So that's some fun for tomorrow.

So eventually it's all back together and tested. New 76 deg thermostat, 60ml of 7000 cls silicon oil in the fan, resurfaced and pressure tested head. Tested yesterday on a big snowy mountain, got up no bother with a very loaded truck temp gauge didnt go over half. So very pleased with that...

Found the problem, managed to trace it back to a crappy wire. Now to put everything back together and then test! Happy Christmas everyone!

Sorry for not being clear, the woodruff key was for the head and is just a filler. The plastic clip is the unknown item i found.

It did cross my mind to take the fuel pump out the saab 900 I have here and do that, but I couldn't be bothered to clear the snow off it, the bike pump option seemed easier. Im thinking about just putting a marine bulb before the filter incase I ever need to do it again (or run out of fuel).

For anyones reference it's best to pressurise the return pipe not the tank as otherwise diesel comes out the return pipe, at least on mine. Bloody low oil light has come on now, and it's full of oil. Hopefully the sensor is just busted, otherwise oil isn't getting back into the sump quick...

Thanks for the reply, the cap is aluminium so the magnet is no good, I've drained the oil now, so going to try to take the pan off. Does anyone know if you can just remove the sump pan and it will come out, or do you have to remove other stuff too?
