Low range without centre diff lock

Noticed on my 150 that the centre diff and high/low range are seperate. Does that mean you can use low range without the centre diff locked? If so I am thinking this would be useful for trailer parking. Have not tried it myself only have access to hard pavement at the moment and don't want to...

    Possible upgrade?

So we are in the situation of the moment of having 2 cars - the 2000 Prado 90 and a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer. We don't need 2 cars any more and are considering selling them and buying a better and diesel 4wd. We need to talk to the bank so nothing's decided but I think the LC 100 or 200 is way...

    400,000km celebration!

On the way home from camping at Easter my Prado ticked over 400,000km (248,000mi). Was on the motorway towing my camper trailer so couldn't stop to celebrate.

    5VZ-FE (petrol 3.4litre V6) draining the block

I've got an upcoming job to replace my knock sensors in my 90 series's 5VZ engine. This involves removing the plenum, intake manifold, and the fuel injection system which are located in the middle of the 'V'. Coolant also traverses through the intake manifold, therefore to remove this I'll...

    Partsouq - opinions?

Anyone used Partsouq? Their prices are very good compared to local dealer quotes I'm getting for my 5VZ-FE knock sensors and harness. I've use Amayama before and the parts were top notch but it took 4 months to deliver 3 bolts. Partsouq seems like they delivery much quicker.

    Flat tyre questions

Hi guys. Picked up my wife's car (Lancer) from the garage today only to arrive home and find my Prado lopsided in the driveway. Passenger front tyre is pooped. I've been meaning to replace all 4 as they are just on the edge of acceptable IMO so I'll bite the bullet on that. Did try and get...

    My Amayama experience

I mentioned in another thread that I would order something from Amayama (3x ignition coil bolts for my VZJ95, part number (amongst others) 91511-G0622). I lost one of my original ones so just bodged a longer hardware shop bolt in with a stack of washers but I wanted to do a proper job of it...

    My first 1KZ drive

Mate of mine allowed me to drive his KZJ120R today, first time I have ever driven a diesel Prado! Very nice drive, having a turbo is addictive. Just with city driving it seems more pokey than my petrol 5VZ despite the kW difference (97kW for the 1KZ (AU spec W/intercooler), 142kW for the 5VZ...

KZJ120 - Cuts out when attempting to start

Just a repair report on my mate's 2005 KZJ120 (Australian domestic market, automatic, 201,000km) Prado - complaint was when turning key on to RUN the car behaved fine with glow plugs running and accessories initialising, however after waiting for the glow plugs and turning the key to START the...

Brake warning light (handbrake warning light)

Hi guys, A few times now I have noticed the handbrake warning light coming on especially going round left corners. I have checked and the brake fluid reservoir is full, plus the handbrake is being put fully off when I set off. I'm confident there's no brake fluid leak - the pedal feel is the...

    Upper ball joint boot

So I was looking around today and found a split in an upper ball joint boot. Looks OK inside and it's just a narrow slit at the moment plus I don't think it's been there long as I last inspected them 6 months ago. Anyway looked in the trusty Haynes manual and replacement of the UBJ (or UBJ...

Seat stain removal - araldite resin

On my last camping trip my toolbox leaked a little Araldite Resin (just the resin component, not the hardener) onto the bottom rear seat bolster leaving a horrible sticky patch about 2" x 1". I've tried cleaning it with soap and water, but of course no go. I just wondered if anyone knows...

Misfire mania and HT lead horror (5VZ-FE)

On a family day out last Saturday everything went well until we got back to the car and fired it up - sounded a bit rough but nothing too bad. Tried to pull away and it pretty much bunny-hopped along at 600RPM, which faded slightly but still vibrating quite badly at 1200RPM. This was only 3km...

    Transmission overfull?

Well we just got back from our trip away from Brisbane to Bundaberg, about 380km total. Got 100km into the trip and plumes of black smoke came from under the car so had to stop on the highway. Tears of red ATF were dripping down from the transmission area onto the exhaust crossover so I just...

    Scuttle panel grot removal

Hi guys, I have quite a lot of tree debris trapped under my scuttle panel. What do you reckon the easiest way to clean this out is - is it safe to just run a hose under there to flush it out or is it best to remove it - looks like the wipers have to come off for this though. I did try hooking...

    Queenslanders - PPQ Japanese plates

My state (Queensland) is now issuing Japanese size and style plates. I'm not a fan of personalised plates but am tempted by these especially since they would fit better on the Prado 95's numberplate area on the back door. Normal Queensland plates are too wide for it by about 1/2" each side and...

    Driveshaft greasing

So I got hold of a grease gun, and tried it out on my trailer's jockey wheel, but it was a bit of a failure - the grease fitting broke off when I tried to get the grease gun off. Now I don't really care about the jockey wheel, but I was contemplating greasing my 90 series's chassis with it, but...

    Check your gutters

Washing my 90 series today and I found a ton of grime and grout in the gutters especially where they narrow at the front parallel to the windscreen. Gently popped off the gutter trim and cleaned out with a screwdriver covered in a cloth. Luckily it was fine but I can imagine this being a rust...

5VZ-FE (V6 petrol 3.4L) lower fan collar. Needed or not?

Hi guys. Washing my Prado and cleaning the engine bay and the lower fan collar popped off. Didn't hear a clip come off or anything so it must have been like that for a while. I'll have to get a replacement clip or bodge with a small nut and bolt but was wondering if leaving it off in the mean...
