Bloody Rain! Will it Ever Stop?

It's the same up here in the Edinburgh area - even the dry days have rain at some point. Will I get the grass cut before it gets to waist height ? The '100' needs welding underneath which I have to do outside owing to the size of the truck. Not enough dry weather yet ! Bob.

    Heavy Steering

The lower ball joints on a '100' are thankfully different to those on a '90' with the joints in constant compression. There is far less chance of catastrophic failure but still worth replacing them if they are worn. Bob.

    driver window switch

I had similar problems with my '90'. It turned out to be a fractured wire where the wiring exits the door - it is constantly flexed as the door opens. A bit of re-wiring cured it (until the next time). Bob.

    Brake dust plates

Hmm, maybe my memory is fading - it has been some years since I replaced my front dust shields. I probably did it while I had the front knuckles out. I have a 30-ton press and got the hubs out of the bearings quite easily (relatively!). I also replaced the shields on the '100' - that was easier...

    Brake dust plates

The fronts are cheap enough and quite easy to fit, I wouldn't cut them (I didn't cut mine), but the rears are very expensive and incorporate the brake caliper mounting. The rear half shafts have to be drawn which is a bit of a faff. It's the old story - if a jobs worth doing. . . . Bob.

    80-Series - No forward drive

Doooooh!! It seems that @Aspire who has been asking me for help as he has the same problem is the guy who spoke to my neighbour in the first place. We've been chasing our tails. I understand that he now has another auto gearbox, it will be interesting to see if that fixes the problem. Bob.

    What a Dirty Slapper!

You might get lucky! In 2005 I bought a 1988 BMW R100GS motorcycle - I was the 12th owner. I've still got it, its been great and is my "go to" bike. Of course, there isn't much tinwork on it to rust ! You'll need to get under it and check everything carefully - but we do that when we buy a new...

Guess Who's [Almost] Back in Circulation?

WOO-HOO Stuzbot's back. Don't be shy it's almost a Landcruiser and will have the same problems so the common bonds will be there! I've missed your sense of humour - welcome back. Bob.

Starting problems. The longer you leave the engine cold the longer it takes…

It sounds like the old problem of a rusty fuel pipe letting air into the fuel system. The pump has to work hard to suck the fuel up to the filter which is what prevents it from starting. Once running the pump stays ahead of the air leak - until you stop the motor. Many have suffered this...

    97 Land Cruiser/Colorado TD - Ignition problem?

It looks like it's been over-pressurising. Are you losing coolant (expansion bottle filling up & overflowing.)? That old radiator looks very rusty inside, has the engine block been flushed recently? It also appears to have had water in it instead of a recommended coolant that would incorporate...

TRANSFER BOX need some advice new member

Simon, Reading this thread again I see that 'Haz' has a D4D and the re-built box I sent him fitted OK so I think that proves that a '90' TB fits both a 1KZ and a 1KD. See my post on that other parallel thread. Bob.

    Prado 95 transfer case issue

Simon, I believe the Transfer Boxes are the same (remembering that those from an 'Auto' are different to those from a 'Manual') - but I have never had one from each side by side to compare. You have your box apart and the Centre Diff Lock Planet Carrier is broken (not uncommon), why not just...

    Prado 95 transfer case issue

Not overkill, but it depends on whether you intend to keep the car for a long time or not, rebuilding a transfer box can be expensive. Does the Transfer lever move easily for its whole travel? on the Auto the transfer lever tower sits on an extension piece that links the gearbox and the...

    Prado 95 transfer case issue

Simon, The low ratio selector is direct acting - the transfer lever moves the dog that engages low. The centre diff lock, on the other hand, works via a sprung selector. This allows the diff lock to be engaged at speed (up to 50mph I believe the book says) but it won't engage until everything...

AHC reservoir empty can I safely drive ??

The springs/torsion bars on a '100' are quite weak - to allow the AHC to raise or lower the chassis. This means you will probably be on or near the bump stops if you drive it. I doubt you will do any damage provided you take it easy for a limited distance. There won't be much in the way of...

    My 2004 100 Series

That all sounds horribly familiar - I had exactly the same problem and took the same path to 'adjust' the motor position to get it to align. Having put the brushes back the locker has never worked, I think there's a wiring fault somewhere. My '100' is currently off the road for some serious...

    80-Series - No forward drive

Hmmmm interesting. I am familiar with '90' Transfer boxes but a 'VC' (Viscous Coupling ?) is a new one to me. Is this specific to the '80-Series' ? I'll need to do some research unless someone can provide an explanation of where it is, what it does and how it works. Thanks for the input, I...

    80-Series - No forward drive

Hi, I'm a stranger to this Forum as I have a 90 and a 100 . . . However . . . A neighbour just phoned, he has a friend with an 80, petrol Auto. The 80 was taken to a garage for an MOT test; they put it on a brake tester (rolling road !) and after that it would only move in reverse. It seems...

    4WD issue

The lights are triggered by switches that bear on the two selector shafts that lock the centre differential and select low ratio. It sounds as though these shafts are not moving in response to the Transfer Lever. Have you removed the Gear lever and Transfer lever recently - its easy to miss the...

Which Jump starter pack to buy

I have a 'Sealey Roadstart' pack. It incorporates an electric tyre pump and a light as well as the starter battery. As I thought, more likely to do damage than good, I'll give this stuff a miss. Thanks for the comments, hopefully my local "old car friendly" MOT Centre will not worry too much about a bit of smoke in the exhaust (fingers crossed). I'm looking forward to this eyesore being removed from my...

Last year I put an old Td200 LandRover engine into an ex-Army Defender 110 for a friend. When it runs it puts out blue smoke and the oil turned black very quickly. A bit of eco-back pedalling.........?

Yes, you're right of course. I was sceptical about the Toyota claim but hopefully they will release details soon so we can see how viable the technology is (if it exists in the real world and not just in a Lab somewhere). Ineos are pursuing Hydrogen technology, but is it for gas-powered ICE...

    A bit of eco-back pedalling.........?

The move to 2035 puts the UK in line with the EU and many other countries. That can only make planning easier for the manufacturers - yet most are complaining about watering down the 'green' commitments. I suspect their objections are intended to publicly boost their 'green' credentials ! The...

The 5 degree play in the front output shaft is just caused by slight slackness in the Hi-Vo chain. even new chains aren't bowstring tight ! 5 degrees sounds minimal, I wouldn't worry about it. Bob.
