Hi,

I put a post up in the Introduce Yourself section: https://www.landcruiserclub.net/com...est-new-to-me-100-series-amazon-owner.150851/

Nice to get so many friendly responses, been on many other forums and this seems like a good place to hang out

I am the proud owner of a silver 100 series gx 4.2td manual which i bought about 2 weeks ago. I had been looking for either an 80 or 100 series manual for the past 6 months or so, I am a jap car fan all the way so also considered a Nissan patrol and the newer version of my old truck the 3.0 Terrano but in the end a 100 series turned up that I really fancied.

It was slightly out my price range but decided as me and my other half were off to longleat in the Terrano (aprox halfway from our house to kidderminster which is where the truck was) we would carry on up the day after and take a look. It was pretty much exactly as described and Andrew was a really nice guy, he had kept it up to scratch for the past 4 years and I think he was a bit sad to let it go, after a test drive and a small bit of haggling I was driving back and let my other half follow me back in the Terrano lol.

Primarily it will be my daily driver and used to tow my drift car to track days. The main reason for changing my old truck is due to towing my drift car to events so far away, when your travelling 5/6hrs sometimes more you want to be in something comfy that pulls well!

My old truck which is a Nissan Terrano 2 I have owned for the past 2 and half years and it has been super reliable, only spent a few hundred quid maintaining it really and drove it all over place, took it around longleat as mentioned above, towed my car and trailer to Anglesey and Middlesbrough to name a few but you can really feel when going up hills etc it does struggle towing 2 ton behind it with all my gear inside. Also due to it only having a 2.7td 4 cylinder engine they gear it quite low from the factory which is great around town but that means at 65mph the truck revs at 3000rpm.

Anyways back to the cruiser!

It's a 2002 gx model so has cloth seats, spring and torsion suspension instead of ahc and it's a manual. It's done 225k which I know isn't a problem with these trucks, the interior has been looked after and driving it you would think it had done half the mileage, it came with some service history and has a few nice bits fitted to it:

N4 skid plate
Safari snorkel
Tune it box
A/T tyres
Roof box

Here is one of the pics from the previous owner that I really like: this pic does hide the paintwork a little, it isn't bad for the age and mileage but not showroom by any means:

I got it up on the ramp at my work and only has a small list of things to do really:

Radio aerial is missing the main bit that comes out the wing so doesn't get any signal
A/c not working
2 patches will need welding in the o/s/r inner arch
n/s/f ball joint has a small amount of play
n/s/r anti roll bar link has a bit of play

These are all things I can get done in time but not entirely sure what I am going to do about the radio/aerial, might try and get a universal electric aerial or I might fit my DAB radio in it's place, I do like the factory 6 cd changer though. I have a few things I want to upgrade or change as well, firstly I removed the previous owners steering wheel knob thing, can't remember the name now but makes you feel like a truck driver and I couldn't get use to it!

I then had a pair of gauges that were previously fitted to the Terrano, boost and EGT. For the boost gauge I tee'd into the small fitting on the throttle body, not sure where I want it inside the truck yet so have taped it to the steering console for the time being as you can see from the pics above.

The Egt gauge is going to be a bit of a longer job and I am probably going to blank the EGR off and use the side that bolts to the exhaust manifold as a good place to fit the sensor.

Otherwise I would like to make a bigger exhaust for it, done this to the Terrano and noticed a difference in spool etc plus I love the sound of a 6 cylinder turbo diesel. Also want to look at what can be done with the vacuum boost control if anything.

As a few of you asked about my drift/track car, it's a Nissan 200sx s14a 2.0 turbo, has a very long mods list so probs better to look through my build thread, link below:

https://www.driftworks.com/forum/threads/the-road-to-competition-in-my-200sx-s14a.269961/

Here is a few pics and a couple video's if you don't want to read the whole build thread:

Thanks for reading will try and take some more pics and keep this updated, I will probably be asking a few questions along the way so bare with me. Any comments or criticism welcome.

Cheers Dan

Welcome Dan.

Nice post. im sure the 100 will prove to be a great motor for years to come.

i had a 200 sx years ago that sadly never made it to the road in my ownership.

Nice cruiser dan, looks like a good one. Managed to get new masts for my 80 aerials no problem fitting them. Hopefully this is all you need. Cheers ben

Congratulations on the upgrade, and welcome to the "100s club".
You mention boll joints -- If you look at OE parts, you'll find only the whole upper or lower arm with the ball included, but there are replacement ball joints available, and you can change them on the car with a biggish C-clamp as a press. Quality seems to be good as well, both for upper and lower.

If you go for a dab radio, get a roof antenna. There are some good ones combined with FM and GPS in one unit. Easy to install just above the dome light. Window mounts don't give a good reception.

Thanks, ye I am definitely looking to keep the cruiser for a while. Ah that's a shame, prices of 200sx's have shot up over the past 5 years! Got any pics of your old one?

Thanks, ye seems like I can get a replacement pretty cheap from the other replies, will keep you posted.

As Ben said, replacement aerial masts are available (https://www.roughtrax4x4.com/genuine-toyota-electric-aerial-mast-100-series.html or pattern from somewhere like this http://www.brooklandmotorfactors.co.uk/category-23/2.921.html ). Easy job, though if the nylon has snapped and left a bit behind in the motor unit, a bit more hassle.

Thanks for that info, ye I might whip the motor off and just double check nothing is left inside and that it actually operates as the mast is completely missing/broken by the looks of it, doesn't look too bad to get to, just inside the passenger wing cover.

Congratulations on the upgrade, and welcome to the "100s club".

Ye I think I will try an aerial mast first once I've had a look but ye fitted a dab radio with window antenna in my Terrano and wasn't that impressed with the signal to be fair so roof mounted one would be a good shout.

Milneroffroad stock the balljoints individually so I will order one at the same time as ordering a few other bits I need. Ye we have a similar tool at work we use for replacing vw transporter and some commercial van balljoints. Cheers for the info though, confirmed what I was hoping to do

My other half fancied a trip to the new Ikea in Exeter today so thought why not grab a photo when the car park was empty ha ha:

Made a start on a couple jobs today, sorry in advance for the not so good quality photo's, the lighting at my work is pretty poor!

Here is my delivery from milneroffroad.com, ordered Thursday and arrived Friday, next day service as promised. Balljoint, cambelt kit and poly bush kit for the rear arb.

First job was to replace the front lower balljoint, here is the offending artical all lubed up:

30357358717_14ca2aa7c3_b.jpg
IMG_20181013_091204 by Daniel Collins, on Flickr

Started to strip bits off, managed to leave the track rod end attached to the hub and use that to hold the hub steady as the abs sensor was also still attached:

44574124344_465ba7563f_b.jpg
IMG_20181013_094822 by Daniel Collins, on Flickr

Got to the point in the picture above quite quickly only slowed down by the balljoints not wanting to split from the hub as they were stuck in bloody tight!

It then came to remove the balljoint itself and found the C-clamp tool we had to remove other balljoints wouldn't fit over the arm/balljoint as the cruiser arm is pretty meaty. Then decided to get a little agricultural (not uncommon for me as I use to be a tractor mechanic) used a couple blocks of wood under the arm with the weight of the arm on them and then gave the balljoint a good couple smacks, boom out it came!

30357365047_eea498ca7d_b.jpg
IMG_20181013_101754 by Daniel Collins, on Flickr

Then to re-fit the new balljoint just done the reverse, lowered the arm onto the balljoint so it had some weight on it and then smacked the arm evenly near to the balljoint which in turn forces it through, did it enough to get the clip in, did take a little while but needs must.

All back together and on the ground, also decided this was a good time to swap the wheels front to rear as the front tyres were wearing slightly more.

Next job was onto the cambelt, removed the cover and few other little bits and soon the belt was there in full sight.

Old stuff on the right and new on the left, to be fair the belt looked in good nick and would probs have gone on a good while longer but better to be safe than sorry as going by the sticker on the cover it was last changed on 170k around 5-6 years ago.

Started it up and ran spot on, re-fitted everything and drove home, nice to not feel any movement in the steering when going over rough bumps in the road and my mind is at rest about the cambelt

I finally sold my spare drift shell and I included delivery as it was only an hr or so drive away. Time for the cruiser to do it's first towing job for me. Here it is loaded up:

Couldn't believe how easy it towed it! I know it was probably only a ton behind, 600kg trailer and maybe 400kg of shell and spare parts but on the motorway I nearly forgot it was on the back. Very happy!

Next thing to look at was the aerial, glad I checked before I bought an antenna on it's own as the aerial had been replaced with a universal one before that had been hacked about a bit:

I remembered that I had my old electric aerial off my drift car in the garage, my 200sx is stripped inside and will never have a radio in it again, I powered it up and it was very slow but got it jammed in the up position to plug the aerial wire in, just incase there is a fault between the aerial and radio, luckily it seemed to be fine so next job is to get it mounted on a bracket and adapt the grommet etc from the old aerial as the nissan one doesn't sit at the same angle against the wing. I will get a pic when I get 5 mins to make it fit properly.

I did consider a coat hanger but I didn't want to lower the 'class' of the vehicle, got a reputation to keep up now I am a cruiser owner ha ha.

Mmmm I do like a good Mr whippy but not sure the cruiser feels the same, maybe I will try feeding it later and see what happens  until then the Nissan aerial seems to be (bodged) working a treat.

You must remember to leave it in the coat hanger shape. Like the thing on a Telly tubbies head

Little update, used the truck for my first long distance towing with the trailer, drift car and gear in the back. It drove great! When you pull away you hardly even have to slip the clutch and your off even on an incline, very impressed. Also was soo comfy in comparison to my old Terrano on the long journey. Did burn a bit more fuel but I expected that.

Removed the roof box before I went, which I might sell as I haven't used it in the past 2 months since I've bought the cruiser. Quite hard to see but also got the 200sx aerial on the cruiser and it was working well the whole way

Drove up the night before with my misses and stayed in a hotel, came out the next morning and the car and trailer were still there so that was a good start!

Was a good day, here is pic of my drift car at lunch time. Managed to keep the car in one piece which is quite rare on drift days like this.

For anyone interested here is a video that my misses took from the wall of what is known as the Meihan track. It is a replica of a drift track in Japan called Meihan.

Unfortunately that is the last drift event I will be going to at Rockingham as they are closing there doors to all racing from the end of the year.

More to come...

Its a shame about Rockingham shutting up!.. But remember there are always the Roundabouts at Sandwich.. Free entry, Families and Children welcome. Police Presence Optional... Gates open 1.00 _3.00pm. Fri and Sat only.:auto-car::auto-crash:.

Found one of the sliders a bit sticky, cleaned and re-lubed and good to go! Also adjusted the handbrake shoes up a couple clicks and it holds lovely now, winner

Then went to a local drift day last weekend, was very wet but still made the best of it. You can see my cruiser in the background of this pic. Looked like I had been rallying ha ha, my bumper is off as I broke it going around a bit too committed on my first lap :auto-nascar: :auto-nascar:

Bit of an update, if anyone has seen my other thread I found that my truck is a bit poorly, read this thread for my initial thoughts and what my diagnoses was that has led me to where I am now:

https://www.landcruiserclub.net/com...evs-poor-running-any-help-appreciated.151241/

To cut a long story short I found over the space of probably a couple weeks (may have been a bit longer but I hadn't really noticed before this) when first starting the truck from cold and under light throttle it would smoke and judder/misfire quite a bit. I came to the conclusion after a bit of time/diagnoses that it was over-fueling due to lack of air especially at low rpm's.

Plan is to start stripping the intake down and have a look, then depending what I find may pull off the rocker cover and check valve clearances etc.

Left the truck at my work so I can do bits as and when I get time on my lunch or at the end of the day.

So looking at this I think I am in the right area, it is thick at-least 5mm and more in some places. From what I can see looking in the top of the manifold it is pretty similar in there too but I can't see how much the intake ports are covered at this minute. Will be pulling that off over the next couple days and hopefully know what I am looking at.

I will update soon, cheers

Dan,
Fwiw please check the delivery valves:

A year ago i had similar issues and found these leaking diesel and letting air in

I'm staggered, That is unbelievable, Can I ask without sounding thick. is that the Norm on Diesels these days.. I remember stripping out the pipe work on my Colorado, To give it a good clean,(out of interest more than anything) Coz it had done 285,000 miles.. It was as clean as a whistle. I know its a different engine to the 3.0td. But that amount of Gunge is mental... Good luck Dan... I think you might of found 'ya' problem..

Thanks but I am fairly sure it isn't a fuel delivery or pump issue at the minute, engine starts straight away on the button so do not think any air is getting in. It just has a small misfire and smokes under light throttle that is a lot less noticeable once the swirl flaps are opened. See below for pics of my intake manifold to see for yourself.

Ye this is one of the more severe cases I have seen however I have seen a lot of LR freelander manifolds and BMW/VAG engine's soot/carbon up however normally they have been taken apart and cleaned a lot sooner due to having other faults like broken swirl flaps/headgasket etc. My cruiser has probably never had any of it's intake or engine stripped down and the build up is from 16 years and 226k miles of use. I also think the last owner might have used the truck for shorter trips just to work and back and possibly it wasn't getting fully warmed up which increases the build up of soot/carbon.

Anyways got the manifold off today and here is what I was greeted with:

Think I'm going to be busy cleaning up over the next few days!

Wow! Amazing.

I had a look yesterday and isn't a simple job (for me) to do so if I can get away without mine for a few days I'll see if I can get some help taking first level off and see if its similar then decide what to do. I thought the fuel filter change helped/fixed but it hasn't, have yet to change/check the in tank filter which is easier than above to do but will get done in the new year. Doesn't affect it once warm and pulls well too so I don't think it is this bad.

FWIW we see it a lot with the VAG direct injection engines, with amazing gains to be had once cleaned, 40-50hp in extreme cases.

These pictures are amazing though, thanks for sharing.
