Maybe they were trying to get rid of the old KZ engines here! D4D did come to the Prado here a couple of years later. Common rail was well and truly established about that time so I guess they had no choice.

I have just found that 5LE engine has a mechanical diesel injection pump, of course as you mentioned no turbo, so very good engine for Africa or countries with no reliable diesel...
