2H Power Recovery

It's on the hills and towing it's really noticeable. They reckon you lose about 20% at the wheels compared to doing it at the flywheel so actually 67 at the wheels probably isn't too bad.
I've got my eye on a turbo, just need that engine and 'box off yours now ;o) can you email a price for the complete vehicle, I need to know how many pennies to save!!
So how about the fuel pump and injectors, at what age or mileage should these be rebuilt or replaced? What are the symptoms that flag that this is required?

Asking the wrong guy I'm afraid, not a mechanical guy! I think generally they are pretty reliable but I have thought about getting the pump checked by a specialist

Decided that the first few tasks should be:

1. Replace O rings and Copper Gaskets in fuel pump delivery valves.
2. Check / set valve clearances mindful that some wear should be anticipated.
3. Get fuel timing checked / set
4. Determine if injectors are operating with correct pattern / atomisation and pressure.

Once these are done will consider next steps.

Ben this wear on the rockers is common on a 2H when there is a few miles on it. Since I had a few spare I had the best 12 refaced to get a good reading when setting. The valve tips can suffer too as the clearances get excessive( I had all the valve tips refaced too).
I set the clearances tonight and it was noticeable how smooth it was setting them. I'd take the rocker shaft off and examine for peace of mind.
When the tappets are set correctly its like a different engine.

Great info, thanks Andy. Will have a look and see how bad things are.

Had the o rings replaced in the delivery valves today and its now running like a sewing machine and much more powerful. So if the valve clearances can improve again it will be like a new car

Shell v power diesel definately beneficial too.
And seems better in the colder mornings.
Anyway, its going in for valve clearances to be adjusted next week hoping that any witness marks are minimal.

It will be interesting to see what they look like ( the rocker tips that is). Will they remove the rocker shaft to examine?. AFAIAA they should be set hot, I set mine cold to start with then hot after, they all needed re setting.
Just back from a run up the motorway in the 60, plenty of power, pulls up hills in 5th ok, holds 70 no prob hills or not and its got about 50 miles on this re built engine now. I expect it to improve a little as the rings bed in but not a lot.

Sounds great Andy. 70 up hill is impressive. An aspiration even!
Not sure if the rocker shaft will be removed, will ask the question. It will be in dry dock for 2 weeks while im away so plenty of opportunity to get it done.
The rocker cover sticker shows cold and hot values. It sounds a bit quieter when hot at the moment.
Checked my 24v 80 rockers at similar mileage and there wasnt a mark on them. I suppose it depends how often they are adjusted and if optimum oil is always used at correct frequencies too

Next thing to consider is how old / good the injectors are. Terrain tamer suggest replacing them every 100k but as i dont know how old mine are, or how to test them, i was thinking of replacing them anyway. There seems to be 3 parts, the injector, a washer and a seat. Would everyone agree that if replacing them then all 3 parts are required? Has anyone done this on a 2H? Is it straight forward or are there common issues to look forward to?
All help greatly appreciated.

You want a set of these:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-L...hash=item41d26b281e:m:meCFXWxhMvYohR6ppa75j9Q

Take them with your injectors to a good diesel shop and have them fitted and "crack" pressures set.

I've used these before ( but not on a 2H) and they do make a noticeable difference to the smoke and smooth running but not a tremendous difference to the power.

On the 2H I've just rebuilt I swapped the injectors for a low mileage set and it does run better fractionally.

Thanks Andy, will look into these when I get back from Hols. Are these the seats / washers?

While away I had the valve clearances set. The exhaust side were a bit tight but no excessive witness marks were noticed.
It really is running sweetly now.
But will check out fuel timing next. Have located an injector specialist locally that can give them a once over if necessary after that.

With an aftermarket turbo, some stories have remarked about the pistons not being man enough and they should be swapped with 12H-T pistons? Not sure about that but nervous of killing the engine prematurely if I go too far.

Really?? I've had 5 60's with after market turbos on and no piston problems. True they don't have piston coolers but they don't really need them.

These pistons had done more than 220k with a Turbo Technics set up and were good enough to be re used in another engine so I don't think the pistons are a weak point.

Fair point Andy, just shows how much crap is written on the internet

Great thread, all.

Lack of power also an issue for me but at ~600,000 kms, Mr.Brown is probably doing well enough though couldn't do without the ARB turbo which I believe was supplied off the production line?

16 inch tyres are great on the highway and for fuel consumption, however 15 inch does alter the drive ratios enough to make hill-climbing and towing just that little bit easier, as does high tyre pressure - I run 70 psi through 235LT.

Blimey, I run 32!!!

Just talking 2wd highway travel - not 4wd off-road. The 70 psi is still 10 psi short of max 80 psi at load rating of 1330 kgs per tyre, which is probably 300 odd kgs more per tyre than anyone would load their 4wd to?

With ~150mm sidewall, the less the pressure, the more the flexing, the more the heat build-up, the greater the potential for blow-outs. So, 7o psi on-road, around 45 psi off-road.

A recent 12,000kms trip up north on tyres with 40,000 kms already travelled saw no punctures or blow-outs. Mr Brown was loaded - 4,400 kgs so the back-end had no chance to get 'lively', and most of the trip was off-the-black. Did we have luck on our side or what!?

It’s a subject of considerable debate whether soft or hard gives you better puncture resistance off road, I tend to fall into the soft camp, also for reasons of traction, but probably could do with higher pressure in the rear when running full on road. I might give 45 a bash and see how it feels. Might even improve my mpg!!
