80 Series Rebuild

Right so after all that do I go for ACL bearings or go straight to my dealer?:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Everyone has there own opinion. For me its Taiho.

So another update!

More new genuine Toyota bits from Chapel gate, conrod bolts, steel brake lines and calliper bolts, highly recommended once again!

Apologies for the terrible pictures but then I fitted the new handbrake cable, steel brake lines, abs sensors etc

Fitted the axle back in without fitting the new callipers, brake hoses etc as I’m sick of working on the ground haha and I have ordered the last few bits to finish off underneath hopefully, including anti roll bar bushes, drop links rear wheel bearings and seals, rear break shoes and fitting kit! Hoping they’ll arrive this week and I’ll get a day over the weekend to make a good attempt at fitting them all!

Gave it a quick wash and fitted the temporary small wheels! More coming soon hopefully!

Declan, this is a real credit to you. Sorry the thread has veered off topic a bit there and there but that's just because people are reading it and are interested in contributing. I'd love the mechanicals off your truck I have to say, they look better than new. Keep it coming.

Cheers mate.
yeah, looks great. What rust treatment and paint did you use?

I can’t remember the names of the but it was just some rust converter stuff and stone chip paint from my local motor factors nothing special!

Sooo a long needed update! Not a lot has been done in the last year with every other financial thing going on  but it hasn’t been completely neglected!

I got the rear brakes finished up

Fitted a new pinion seal on the front diff

I also had 2 adjustable panhard rods made up, yet to be painted!

I finally got my 3” lift kit as well! Shocks, springs, extended brake lines and castor correction bushes! Very happy with the quality of the stuff !

The spring don’t seem that much taller but they are about 4-5mm thicker over the standard ones which will obviously raise it up a bit more!

Also started a small bit of a clean up on the engine bay.

After polishing!

Still not fully finished yet! I want to repaint the turbo bit in red and then do the rest of the intake manifold, should clean the engine bay up nicely!

So other than that I’ve got a set of 40mm wheel spacers, repaired one of the headlights! That’s pretty much it, I was thinking of painting the panhard rods yellow to match the springs? Opinions and all comments welcomed! Hopefully the next update will be a lot quicker and more action packed :grimacing:

Finally got around to fit the lift kit, the castor correction bushes were a bit fiddly to line up but apart from that is was straight forward!

Looks a bit stupid with the tiny tyres but I’ll have a set of 35” ones coming shorty! Here’s a height comparison with a standard one

There’s obviously still a tonne of stuff left to do but it’s slowly getting somewhere!

Getting there but certainly keeps the miles down! Tell me, how did the 40mm spacers work out on the standard wheel studs- I had trouble on 30mm spacers and had to fit longer studs which is why I ask. Did you also fit the revised drive flanges to the front hubs? Do t forget to adjust the rear LSPV

I haven’t fit the spacers yet I’m waiting for the bigger tyres to come before taking the wheels off again ha but looking at them I don’t think there will be any need for longer studs, hopefully :coldsweat: no I just have the original flanges fitted with new cv joints.

Yes the lspv is on the list as well, I was doing a bit of research on it and people seem to be lowering it about 5-6mm to compensate?

Ah OK maybe a different profile spacer. Mine were roughtrax and the stud was about 2 threads shy of exiting the nuts. If you fit the 35 you may want to upgrade the flanges or carry a spare particularly if you go off road.

I cannot be sure if this is the same failure that has caused the front wheel to fall off some trucks. At the least you can loose drive but cdl will still get you home. Have you done the dash switch mod as well, there are a lot of posts so I didn't read back through.

Are you refitting the rear wheel arch? I might have the bit that attaches to the door.

Yeah I’ll be refitting the arch at some stage, when I got it first one part was missing completely and one was damaged but I’ve fixed it up a while ago. It’s not perfect but I’ll let whoever is painting it finish it off!

So finally got around to doing the big end bearings, sump took a bit of persuading but eventually came loose!

BF7C87EA-BD5B-49CD-8855-E684CE757CAB.jpeg

This was the number 4 bearing, couldn’t believe how bad it was! And to think I wasn’t going to do these at all until someone on here warned me!
625279BE-800F-4695-B949-DC69927F58B0.jpeg

The rest were fairly ok, nothing compared to no.4 I think this was number 2 which was the worst out of the rest of them!
5A47B806-2A1D-45E8-A17E-646F69F83120.jpeg

Also did the timing belt, tensioner, new waterpump and thermostat, all genuine Toyota bits used apart from the Taiho bearings.

Got it all back together and it ran perfectly, oil pressure seems to be slightly higher too which is a good sign that the old bearings were on the way out!

Well done. Another save. I'd suggest that the higher oil pressure was due to new oil though. Oil pressure isn't really symptomatic of BEB condition such as this

Long overdue update!

Finally managed to pick up some suitable tyres, Toyo 315/75R16.

Also got the turbo, injectors, and alternator rebuilt, painted the exhaust manifold etc to try tidy things up!

Also picked up these air helper springs, seen lots of good reviews online about them, seem to be a good upgrade!

This is how it’s currently sitting, it’s off for paint in the next week, hoping to have it on the road by July! Been a long time coming

Going to be worth the wait though

I like your tyres, where did you source them? Did you get new injectors or are they recon. Looks really good. Glad you kept the original wheels too. hopefully you get it on the road before the EU banishes us to eternity.

I got the tyres for Jb tyres up in Northern Ireland I think. Fully recondition injectors with new nozzles etc.

Hey Declan!

Great thread. Thanks for sharing!

Can't wait to get going on mine....

Andy
