advice needed

Hello and welcome, sorry to hear of your problems. A few more details of which model you have would be handy, I expect that your engine is petrol (gas). Was the service that you had just an oil change, was it done at a Toyota dealer ?

Hi, flint, and thanks for your reply. Yes, our LC is petrol (gas). It's the 4.7L V8 with 275hp. I bought from a Toyota dealer who originally sold it to a local winemaker who had three LCs, one for himself and two for his adult children. It came with no documentation about service but a Carfax report of two minor fender bender incidents some years back. The oil change was performed at a local quick change shop (Oil Can Henrys).

I like to say I'm too old (76) to have Early Alzheimers so it must be the real thing! Something to which to look forward.

I lied earlier when I said there was no history on this 2006 LC. Carfax had pretty much the complete service history from the unit's sale in July 2005 with five miles on the odo. I'd forgotten until spousal unit (Judi) reminded me. The majority of entries were oil/filter changes done at the dealer (McMinnville (OR) Toyota/Volkswagen). It says on a summary page, no structural damage, airbag deployment or odo rollback until Aug. 2016 when "damage to left front" reported.

When we bought the vehicle in Feb. 2019, the CD/DVD changer did not work and the battery would not hold a charge. We took it to a local independent mechanic who traced the problem to battery drain due to the changer and disconnected it. No electrical problems since.

In addition to the Carfax report, there are three pages from McMinnville Toyota service archive:
June 18, 2018, 167783 miles: c/s check engine light on, check engine light flashing VSC and TRAC Off light on. Can feel engine is running roung (sic; think s/he meant rough) at check in. Please check and advise. Installed spark plug insert, replaced spark plugs, water pump, timing belt, head assembly and coil.

July 23, 2018 167783 miles: 1) complete used suv/trk detail, 2) diag for radio issue, checked for draw, replaced radio and working good at this time 3) checked battery and found battery failed load test, replaced under 2 year 100% warranty.

August 3, 2018, 167784 miles: customer states the check engine light is on. Diagnose and advise on repairs. B1S1 a/f sensor bad due to head gasket leak into exhaust. Replaced sensor and all working good at this time.

John again: obviously we did not do due diligence prior to purchase or at minimum did not pay attention to what are now obvious red flags. Bad John, bad!

USD9K for an engine rebuild on an 06 petrol with close to 200,000 miles? Personally I'd just part it out and start again (at least in the UK, at any rate).

Thanks for your thoughts, Dave. We decided to cut our losses and donate the LC to the local public radio station. They will auction it and we'll be able to take any proceeds beyond expenses as a tax deduction. If anyone on this list is interested in a cheap '06, contact me and I'll make arrangements to get it to you (at buyer's expense, natch).

Details: ~170miles; ran like a top until Sun., Aug. 11, champagne color, leather interior, auto tranny, we are the second owners.

Sounds like you've made a good choice if you're not into repairing it yourself.

p.s. You could try this forum https://forum.ih8mud.com to see if anyone local to you might be interested or give you a better diagnosis. It sounds as though it's more than just a burnt valve if the engine started knocking, but a local specialist rather than a main dealer might give you more idea of what is actually wrong.

Hi, Flint,

When it comes to mechanical ability, I rank right behind a doorknob, i.e., close to zero. I have assisted real mechanics work on cars when I was a teenager (when dinosaurs walked the earth) but my assistance was pretty much limited to passing requested tools. I leave real mechanical work to Real Mechanics.
