Anyone using this unit from Roughtrax...https://www.roughtrax4x4.com/toyota...denso-diesel-alternator-80-amp-cold-spec.html
The existing one looks like the original so at 21 years old not done bad I guess. We have a local repair specialist in town who can diagnose/repair and even rewind if required so that will be first port of call. As most will know there are some much cheaper units around nowadays but are they any good?

Not sure why it brings up a pic of the 100 series unit when you search 80 series parts but if they can supply the same part £100 cheaper then that’s a steal:thumbup:
It’s not actually causing issues just yet but the existing unit can’t deliver more than 13.8v no load even when revved and a decent load with headlights, HRW, blower etc drops it down to around 12.5 so it’s getting tired.
Not so long ago it was 14.3> at fast tickover.

Try a new regulator thingy. I bought a spare recently for about £30.

And Robson and Francis can supply either a new Denso unit, regulator and/or diode pack and can probably supply a very good remanufactured unit with a no quibble warranty. Talk to Mike.

It's more likely to be the rectifier going bad than the regulator.

I have similar symptoms to Towpack and having a browse around, I see some rated up to 140amp but the one thing I'm seeing is that the 80, 90 and 100 series are all using the same alternators? is this correct -all the holes and terminals look in the same place and assuming the pulley ratios are the same?

Ok so I looked at fitting a higher rated Alternatorfrom a 90 or 100 and although they looked the same in the pictures there are some differences. I received this reply from Schmitzer in relation to a 140amp alternator for a collie and it seems that a 100 series alternator will work but with a different bracket...

Also there is a Promo Code at Opieoils as above which gives free shipping plus 10% off so it brings the cost down to £161 for a genuine Denso @80amps. AFAIK the OEM is 55Amp but I may be corrected on that..

From Schmitz Remanufactured ..Please see my notes:

1. This item 142991181785 - is definitely not correct, different fitment- so ignore that.

2. Your truck was originally fitted with a small body alternator 60 or 80 amp - which we do not have in stock.

3. You can use an larger 120 amp Alternator, which was standard fit on 4.2 Land cruiser from 1998:

Please see eBay item number: 132851394420 - this is a very common upgrade by older 4.2 land-cruiser owners.

4. However, it needs to be used in conjunction with a wider alternator bracket, part-number "16381-17020"

You will need to source 16381-17020 bracket from dealer/internet with this, the alternator will fit without any further modifications.

Its also possible that maybe longer belts are required as well...

I bought one for my KDJ90 recently new on ebay for 90 quid , its her daily driver and only goes to work and back 20 miles a day , identical copy fit and works fine so we will see how long it lasts .

The "cold spec" alternator is 80 amp.
UK 80s are cold spec.

I bought a regulator for mine, fitted it, no change then bought a complete new alternator, still no change, they were going to send me a replacement but gave me some checks to make, you should have 12v down all 3 wires going to your alternator, I didn’t, it was the fusible link on the passenger battery that was broken. Do you have the warning lights on on your dash?

Can’t remember the supplier but it was recommended by Chris, they even knocked the price of the regulator off the new alternator, so I’d give them a +1

Cheers

My issue is that I only get charge at about 2000 RPM and at idle I seem to get voltage wastage. Driving with headlights and wipers on together is not currently an option in the drop down menu. Belts are pretty tight.

@steverjuk I think the higher amperage units are simply bigger in size and a 120amp can be made to fit with the extended bracket, whereas a 140amp one cannot (well anything is possible really). Higher amperage Alternators are less efficient if you dont need the extra current. they recharge quicker after, cold start but the rest of the the time they increase fuel consumption.

Thats what I was thinking. Schmitx do a recon unit for £100. Tell me, did you have to change the adjuster bracket as well ?

Out of interest does it need a bigger one than 80 amp
