Anyone using a Solar battery maintainer like in the link?

Are these effective or a gimmick? They could be handy for me if they are effective. If you have a spare 12v battery that's not fitted to a vehicle can the panel be used to charge the battery directly without having the power cable from the panel plugged into a cigarette lighter socket? ie: Just literally connecting the 2 crocodile connector leads to the battery. Or does the power cable have to be plugged into a cigarette lighter socket?

Perhaps a member has some experience of these they could share?

I’ve got a couple of similar , small, old ones( from maplins years ago!) on my boat, they work a treat at just keeping the batteries topped up
