hi everyone,my first post on this site but i have posted a bit in the other place!just wondering if anyone has gone down the autolocker route for their lj70.i,ve found a few autolockers for the lj rear on various sites but they all say not suitable for the 4 pinion lsd diff.i,ve been told i probably need to look for one that is specified for a hilux especially on the american sites as they didnt get the lj 2.4td out there.im worried about getting something sent from USA and finding out its not suitable.any ideas out there ,any help would be appreciated
i,ve been following some of the thread s on engine swops.thers a complete Lexus 1uz on e bay at the moment in cheshire.it might be of use to you Pete if you go down that route as its been taken out of a car and is complete with all ancilleies, uncut loom and ecu.it looks like a crazy complicated conversion but you would have one beast of a motor if you could do it.250bhp as standard and chippable to 300 plus.wow

i didnt think you could fit an auto locker like a detroit locker, lockrite etc. in an LSD diff, i thought it had to be an open diff.

i may be wrong though. :?

if you do get one id be interested to know where you got it from and how much.

im waiting for KAM to finish testing and start selling there new 70 series lockers.

hhmmm.having researched this a bit more it seems the stumbling block is definately the lsd already fitted to the back axle.none of the detroit style auto lockers will fit into this carrier.some of the american diff and pinion sites list a front auto locker for the lj70.would it be possible to take the open diff and carrier from another lj front axle ,then fit it to the back axle and then fit the detroit locker into that.anyone with a bit more knowledge than me(that,ll probably be pretty much everyone on this site!) got any ideas on the feasibility of this

if you want an open rear diff then use an LJ78 prado (5 door import) rear diff. while your at it you could get the rear discs, callipers and carriers and convert the rear of your LJ70 to discs.

Or if your really lucky you might find an LJ78 with a rear diff lock, in which case you then wont need to buy a locker aswell.

in answer to your question, yes you should be able to fit an open front diff in your rear axle in place of your LSD, i believe you will just need to change the bearings for a different size, or at least thats what has to be done to fit a rear diff in the front.

another option would be to have your rear LSD re-built and tightened up with shims. this would make it lock up a lot quicker amd obviously be a lot better off road, as id imagine most LSD's would be quite worn by now, i know mine is.

but................youd need a specialist to do this for you.

you won't be able to use a front high pinion diff in the back, well you could but because you would be running on the coast side of the gears the diff will be 30% weaker so prone to breaking, why not get a hilux diff, beleive that they should fit but the ratio im not sure on

The light duty rear diff. with the Toyota LSD can be modified by fitting the Detroit Trutrac diff. unit. You remove the original diff unit and substitute the Trutrac. It's as simple as that.

The Trutrac uses gears as opposed to plates, does not require any special oils, and is progressive in operation. On a sealed road surface it will control wheel spin in tight turns, reducing the tendency for the back end to break away. In a cross axle situation it will progressively channel up to 80% of the torque to the wheel with grip. Sometimes it is necessary to dab the foot brake to initiate the system.

It's a fit it and forget unit. It requires no maintenence and creates no extra noise.

I bought mine from Milner Off-Road, their part no. BH004, it cost £335 plus VAT and carriage and that was August '08

Hi Roger.thanks for your input.this is what has been confusing me .i was under the impression that none of these aftermarket diff lockers or truetrac type lsds would fit into my diff carrier with the factory lsd already installed.this is great news that the trutrac will fit.i think theres a later version of the trutrac that acts as a lsd and a diff locker.any ideas if that will fit.il try to get the refefernce for it

Hi
Just checked with Milners , No stock and none in near future !

I have same problem noisy diff and rear wheel brgs.

Looking to upgrade or just repair

garry, quite a a few of the french and american shops seem to stock trutrac and detroit lockers for our motors.i,ve had parts sent from france with no drama and they,ve arrived within 5 days.not had anything sent from america yet though.when i get in il post up links to the suppliers ive looked at

Great stuff, was looking for one of the Detroit products for my rear diff on my lj70, but couldn't find anyone in the UK. What would be the options for the front diff? Can one of these be used or would it ruin the steering?

i,m far from an expert on this ,but from the research i,ve done a detroit trutrac would work equally well in the front also but you would need to keep your front hubs unlocked for road use or you might run into a few handling/steering problems .maybe anyone who has put one in their motor can shed more light on this

Only problem with using a trutrac in the front is what do you do when it snows? You could wave goodbye to either your ability to steer if you engage your hubs or your 4wd if you don't

I have a recollection that someone on the Difflock forum fitted a Trutrac into the front axle of a 70 series without any ill effects.

I suggest you email:-

[email protected]

He is a Sales Administrator at Eaton Corporation.

If he is no longer there, try differentials@eaton .com

When I asked Brent if it was feasible to fit one in the front, his comment was "the unit has no downsides as far as noise or handling issues".

As well as asking about direct sales, you could ask for their Aftermarket Distributor List.

For the 70 series rear axle, the model no. is 913 A 610 part no. 52888.

Please note that whereas the bearings on the Toyota diff. are an interference fit, the Trutrac's are a press fit ie you will need a hydraulic press to fit them.

I,ve just sourced a rear axle from a 1992 import lj78 prado with factory diff lock on it.i,m gonna been putting this on my 1988 lj70.everything i,ve read on the recent posts would indicate its a straight swop.Ben i know you,re doing the same thing.have you swopped your axles yet?.if so any issues?.Information from anyone else who has already done this would be much apprecicated.i mainly thinking if brake lines will have to be altered to accomodate the rear discs as opposed to my existing drums. The axle is being couried down fron oop north so i havent even seen it to be able to make a comparison betwwen the two.Any help much appreciated
