Any suggestions please . 2005 D4D with 152k miles on the clock is smoky black at low rpm but once the engine warms up and gets into higher revs it is clean . It's just passed it's MOT last week . Vehicle pulls ok . But has been driven by an older man like a granny for years just one owner .
Hope to hear a few suggestions .

On tickover open the air box and give a 1 second squirt into the intake pipe every 3 seconds until the can is empty then get out on the motorway and thrash it .

Get impatient emptying the can and a 3 second squirt will up the revs until your engine sounds like a bucket of bolts thrown on a tin roof because its misfiring which is not good and could ultimately cause serious damage .

"Italian tune up"

I’d favour removing the air intake manifold and removing the crud but it amounts to the same thing.

Almost empty your tank and pour a full can of Wynns Eco Diesel in (yes I know the instructions say less but you can run this stuff neat) then take it for a heck of a good thrashing and look out for clouds out the back. Get it nice and hot and drive it hard. Mine was sluggish as could be after arriving from Japan and after a month it was like a different car.

Thanks for reply guys . So you think it's EGR and inlet manifold that's fouled up after years of slow driving . And it needs cleaning by one of these methods
Thanks again .

The Eco Fiesel is for the injectors, Shayne is referring to EGR crud. Both will probably need doing.

Would I be better handing the task to a local mechanic to clean the inlet manifold and egr or is it a job an average home mechanic could do , and using Eco Fiesel also .

Pretty straightforward with backup from us on here. If you do it yourself,
1, you see what it was really like,
2, you know it’s done properly and
3, you will learn a bit about your truck.

The Eco Diesel is just empty into tank and drive. That’s the fun part. I’d tackle the intake pipework first though for best results. I’m told if you unbolt the bits, Mr Muscle oven cleaner is good for removing the crud. Not sure if it’s plastic safe but if it comes in a plastic bottle of the same type it’s almost certain to cause no harm. Metal parts can be burned out with a torch or use Mr M.

I did a Landrover Discovery Egr and Inlet manifold a few years ago . So I'll have a go . Bye for moment.

I would say it’s injectors causing black smoke. Deposits on injectors can cause a weak spray pattern/atomisation with poor combustion especially when cold.
A good injector cleaner is worth a shot as its easy to administer prior to removing the injectors and having them stripped, cleaned and recalibrated if it has no effect. This stuff is supposed to be quite effective...https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Liqui-Mo...=3228243507246189bbf2353a49828b45fa6baa8a164d

I test drove and bought a 15 year old 2002 D4D Corolla with only 40k on the clock and having paid for it emptied a can of EGR cleaner into it right there on the forecourt .

Maybe half mile on te car let out such a belch of black smoke my daughter in law who was to drive it home actually stopped in panic . She followed me to the first motorway service station and was grinning with all doubt removed when we got there .

Told her to put a bottle of this in her tank next time she fills up https://www.halfords.com/motoring/e...ves/wynns-formula-gold-diesel-treatment-500ml and she will be good for years so long as she keeps up with service intervals as they are show in the book that came with the car .

2 months ago she phones me saying its failed m.o.t on emissions , ok says me when is it due a service ......... hmmm don't know she says , ok when was it last serviced says me ........... hmmm 2 or 3 years ago .

:scared-eek: she drives close to 20,000 miles a year ! :angry-screaming:

Full service and passed no bother at all because its an old Toyota

Having smoking issues myself, I did a bit more research, and I recon my issue is the injector seals, might be worthwhile you checking this out for yourself:

That is the classic result of failed injector seals (sheets) where the contaminated oil from the rocker area has then dropped down into the sump and blocked the oil pickup. This has then restricted oil flow to the top of the engine wearing rings etc. Have you looked up through the sump hole and inspected the screen on the pickup?
