My odometer has been eratic and the trip meter wouldn't reset so I took it apart and worked out that the motor was very tight. So in desperation I bought a cluster out of a 96 90series and did a transplant of the circuit board which had also corroded on mine although everything was testing fine.
Apart from the plastic chassis being different in that the push button for the trip meter reset is in a different position, everything else is similar. You have to swap the timing belt micro switch and reset also. The charge capacitor on the 90 series is 25v 100u as opposed to a 25v 10u one on the 80 series. I think it smooths out the power to the motor...
Now I can't road test it until the mot but if you aren't fussy about having a trip meter reset you could just transplant the whole mechanism (with a milage correction of course). I think a CarinaE and Camry of the same era are compatible too.
just need to hope it doesnt drive like a 90 series.......
