been hunting for a while for a higher amp output for the 5VZ, and at least here in Australia they don't really make them, can get them for the diesel but not mine, and kinda gave up on it, then while looking up on where the stock ground wires are to do a big three I found the timmy the toolman vid on the 3rd gen 4runner which has the same engine, and he installed a CS144, basically a bolt on upgrade, only things needed was a wiring adapter and a few washers on the top bolt as the housing is a little shorter than the stock one, I am however curious to see if anyone else has done it already and used it offroad, curious to see how the new alt does with mud for example, or if it's a case of just clean them off and that's that

I looked into it, the 90 series 5vzfe gets a crappy 60A alternator from factory. I found that there is quite a variability on the CS144 alterantors, cheap ones are just cheap and not very reliable, the good ones were very expensive but there are some middle ground ones sold via Amazon international. I ended up putting on a 4 runner alternator that gives me 80A and has been fine for the last 3 years. I have a lithium leisure battery and few extra lights and winch and has been just fine tbh. if you find a good source at a decent price no issues going with the CS144 though, it does bolt straight in and as you say you just need a pigtail adapter.
regarding mud I thin it's just as every other alternator, a good clean will keep it running just fine

ya that was my thoughts too that just decent care and a cleaning and it should be fine, I'm not sure if it's any different between the 90 and the 95 but the ones down under get an 80 amp from factory, which will be fine for my camping set up, fridge winch and lights, but I was also looking into a sound system which will need more juice, I think there was a higher amp output for the diesel which is my understanding would just need a new pulley and would mount up fine, but it would cost more than cs144 for less amps

I had thought there may be some audio reason for the upgrade, I think in that case it makes sense, running a big amp etc.. I have a 95 too, from all the (little) info I found all petrol were getting the 60A alt and the diesel versions an 80 but not sure, I know the Aus spec 5VZFE 95 has a different air filter… so anything could be…
I think if you need the extra Amps the cs144 is likely the cheapest way to get the power. Being in the us you could probably get it from a junkyard for fe $…

yaaaa pioneer 5 channel with an RMS of 1000w, wants 90 amps just to itself which will make it a bugger to run, however 140amp alternator while be fine for either heavy winching or music, and if I'm stuck the music will not be cranked so the amps power draw will be a lot less, I still have a few off roader mods to do before I even consider the audio setup so for now the stock one is more than fine, thank you!
