difflock not ingageing?

There can be many resons please give a idea to things like when did you last use it and what have you done to try
and get it working ? and any symtptoms !

Went laneing today local put into 4L first engaged difflock and abs light came on red difflock light came on but flashed no traction only used difflock x2 in 3 years drove forward and backward no joy tried tapping it to free no joy not sure whst els to do
