If you're after raster maps have a look at this site, you can download georeferenced tiles of the area you're interested in and piece them together in various programs.

I have ozi format merged maps of pyrenees from mid-pyrenees > Collioure on med coast i could upload

I will take a look Jon. As for scale, well the more and the bigger the scale the better.
Where, well most of it, if not all as not sure where I maybe going yet.

The reason is I have been offered a trip

That site offers up to 25k but in quite small tiles in terms of land coverage so we opted for 50k and it was still quite a bit of messing about getting all the tiles. Still better than not having them though
