Do I have to replace the transfer Case Output Shaft Drive Chain?

Hi everyone,

I'm Dhanu from Sri Lanka

I have a Toyota Hilux LN165 ( YOM 1997 ) with 2LTE engine and 4X4 automatic transmission gearbox.

Recently, I have figured out there is a big jerk coming out from the gearbox when I shift my gears from "N to R" and "N to D" (in 2H mode), and also it feels like the vehicle gets twisted towards right side when the gear engages from "N to R". Can this happen due to the bad Transfer Case Output Shaft Drive Chain?

Attaching some pictures of my Hilux's transfer Case Output Shaft Drive Chain ( Part number: 36293-35040 ) FYR.

Thanks,
Dhanu

The chain is expensive and if you have already removed it then why not try shortening it a few links

As my mechanic suggested the jerk coming from the gearbox even when I drive in 2H mode due to the bad chain. Is it possible? will it be stopped after replacing the chain? :relieved:

The drive train shunt you describe has been mentioned on the forum many times with regards to the 90 series Landcuiser which is similar enough to share some parts with your Hilux i believe .

Never in an auto though ?

The chain is in the transfer box which is bolted to the rear of your gearbox and if it was stretched then it would cause the symptoms you describe .

Surely theres a number of Hilux forums where those more familiar with your vehicle might offer advice .

The factory workshop manual will give the spec' on how tight the chain should be. It would not cause car to pull to one side though unless you have wheelspin.
