Engine condition

Hey guys. I have the 1HZ engine in the 75 series ute. I'm wanting to get better power out of the engine. I'm planning on turbocharging is towards the end of the year but at the moment what are some things that I can check out to see if they need replacing or servicing to get better power. For example what tests can I get done to tell me the engine condition like a compression test? Also what about injectors and fuel pump? What can I do to make sure everything is as good as can be? Thanks for any help.
