Exhaust Manifold studs

Finally had enough of losing expensive Toyo red through my stuffed by-pass pipe which is nicely tucked away under the exhaust manifold/turbo.

Anyhow, looking at the exhaust manifold studs/nuts is stuff made of nightmares. Pure rust. Real nasty.

So what is best for removing these wee buggers?
Is it Ok to apply some heat & penetrating oil around that area?

Thinking if I get too excited with a breaker bar might end up with a broken stud in the head.
A whole different world of pain then.

Thoughts on tackling these little rust buckets appreciated.

Dave.

Dave, when I did this job I found that the couple of nuts that were seized/rusted on actually wound the stud out of the head which wasn't an issue. I think it only happened to 2 of them, the rest did actually undo despite looking like they had never been off in the last 18 years.

Cheers. Might grab a few new studs in case the same happens on mine.
Do no harm putting new studs in if the old ones come out.

Thinking the manifold nuts near the firewall will be fun to get at. Lucky have long arms.:wtf:

Anyhow, seems like a good time to change out the turbo oil and water pipes while in there.

Dave.

yeah, think will give them a good soaking a few days in advance. Not real keen to put a flame near them. Should be fun...
