Help with HJ75 roof/windscreen?

Hi there folks

A friend of mine's asked me to help get his 1989 HJ75 ute (pickup) back on the road after sitting for a couple of years. It's got some nasty rust in the A pillars and the roof gutter on both sides, and it looks like these pieces are a bolt off/on piece, and I've seen people selling fibreglass replacement pieces. Can anyone tell me if this is this a reasonably straight forward repair, and maybe point me to any information/guides to do this? Is it legal/safe to use fibreglass replacements?

Thanks in advance, and I hope this isn't something that's been asked a million times... I did use the search function but couldn't find anything.

I would look for a steel roof as it won't affect the structural interrogatory of the vehicle & won't need a mod plate or certificate, they come up all the time on eBay, have seen them go from $100 up to $700 for a good one,

fitting a fiberglass roof will require a ADR certification, i was going to get one myself but decided against it after talking to an engineer.

section 22, of the ADR state this,
Fitting of fibreglass body panels where the original panels were welded on or where
structural integrity is affected.
Examples requiring certification:

Fitting fibreglass body panels where the original panels were welded on.

Fitting fibreglass body panels causing any change to the structure or the body of the
vehicle.

Examples not requiring certification:

Replacing original bolt-on mudguards, bonnet,
or boot lid with identical fibreglass
panels

there are lots of 4x4 dismantles in Oz & there are still lots of new & genuine parts floating around for early cruisers, do a google for 4x4 dismantles in Oz there are lots out there, i found eBay was a great place to shop when getting my 1989 hj75 back on the road :)
brand new steel windscreen frame will set you back around $800AU & i have seen good used rust free ones go for around $200

windscreen pillars are around $110

Thats very interesting Brett, I was going to fit a fiberglass windscreen surround to one of mine to replace a rusty one. Didn't realise it would need engineering/mod plating.

might be worth checking with your local state rules, its a bit sketchy with different rules from state to state, I have noticed that some of the adds selling glass roofs & surrounds state they are DOT approved so maybe something has changed, it has been a couple of years since i was looking at getting a glass roof and surround, my argument would be there are plenty of full bodied fiberglass hot rods & kit cars legally registered in all states of AU on the road.
I have been looking at replacing the old windscreen surround with a new genuine steel one that is only $100 more than a glass one, the old original one has lasted 28 years so a new one should last just as long.

If we lived in the US we could buy a new steel one from here :)

Thanks for the info Brett. Have made some phone calls and found 'glass ones that are engineer approved replacements, so will probably just plump for them instead of fighting to get metal ones in decent condition. :)
