A quick intro before I pick your brains:) I have just bought a KZJ70 - initially I was going to buy a Surf but I knew that I would never be happy with it knowing that I wanted a KZJ:) At the moment it is having a service down in Basingstoke, and in the meantime I want to get a few pressies for it.

Apparently Devon 4x4 is meant to be the mecca for all things off-roading, but twice now they could not help me out! Initailly I was looking for an ARB rear bumper - computer say no, and just now I have enquired about getting a roof rack for the truck and again computer say no:). So, can anyone point me in the right direction for an ARB roof rack or similar alloy rack, and what size would I need? Primarily I want to use the rack for a roof tent -which brings me to the second question, what poly-cotton roof tent do you recommend? Going back to the roof rack - I have a sunroof, so is the rack adjustable height-wise to allow me to still use the sunroof?

Your help is much appreciated.

Graham

Devon 4x4 tends to be primarily land rover orientated

you need to speak to West coast offroad as hairyguy has said

is TonyN off the hiluxsurf forum doing the service - its in good hands if he is!. (I know he is in Basingstoke)
helped me out on forum when i used to own a 4runner

You guessed correct Andy - and he is going to be getting more business from a mate of mine who has just bought a Surf on Sunday and found out today on the drive from Reading to Grays that it's a right wrong'un :naughty:

THanks to the others for the replies - Westcoast it is!

The moonroof (it's not big enough for a sun roof!) is slide only, not tilt and slide, so a standard style roofrack will be ok.

welcome to the forum.

great choice of vehicle.

most of the decent 4x4 parts come from OZ, and seen as they never got the KZJ70 were a little limited with what parts are available for them.

im not sure ARB do a rear bumper, but im pretty sure Kaymar do.

wont be cheap though. :?

you might be better getting one made by a fabricator who specialises in 4x4's. macsport 4x4 do some tidy work from what ive seen. :)

as for the roof rack and sun roof issue, as Roger said, the sunroof opening wont effect your choice of roofrack, because the sunroof slides back inside the roof.

Thanks Ben. Maybe you can help me on another problem I have. I want to at some point get an expedition trailer but I am keeping my options open - hence going roof rack / tent for now. I want the NATO hitch set-up for the trailer for obvious reasons/benefits. The truck already has a tow bar fitted (ball hitch) but it will be too low for a good expedition trailer - and defo too low if i decide to lift the truck. Now, on the rear crossbar (think thats what it is called - still getting used to terminology:)) there is a towing hook that is bolted to the bar using 4 bolts. Now ive read somewhere (maybe this site) that the dimensions of holes are NATO standard, so im thinking of taking the tow bar off and bolting a adjustable dixon bate plate to it to give me the height I may need in the future - is this going to work?

In fact looking at your photobucket piccies you have the same set up as me currently as far as the tow bar is concerned and you have the towing hook I was referring to......

Nato hitch fits perfectly into the holes in the rear cross member:

You will need longer bolts though.

correct me if i am wrong
the 70 series tub dimensions are the same from 1985 to 2011.
the only difference (body wise) is the LD Cruisers have the smaller rounder front clip and HD Cruisers have the boxy front clip.

so a roof rack, rear bumper, side bars, ladders, door panels etc are interchangeable between the models.

i know the LJ70 tub is exactly the same dimensions from the firewall back to the rear doors.

so if you order a roof rack for the BJ70/LJ70/HZJ70/PZJ70 it will bolt onto the KZJ70 tub.
anything forward of the firewall is different between the LJ/KZJ70 and the others.

hope this is helpfull.

cheers

<is your KZ a KZTE or a KZT?

Thanks that makes life a lot easier - means I can now buy a sankey trailer I have my eye on

Thanks for that - I have been having problems from suppliers when I ask if they can supply for the 70 series so I really need to know what dimensions the 70 series takes for a roof rack - i'll try west coast4x4 tomorrow to see if they can help. I have a UK 1KZT :D

I would very much agree that Paul, his dad, and brother are the ones to speak to.

Best give them a phone call.

Gra.

ps,,
And then when you go to collect your ARB, and your roof rack, you will want , , , , , , , , ,their 50mm lift suspension, , , , ,

i know the KZTE can be troublesome but i have heard the KZT is a wicked little engine.
i have a KZTE 78 series sitting here and the power is amazing but the E problem has been undiagnoseable since last Oct. we have tested all the sensors, tested the ECU, changed out the injectors, checked the timing, next is to swap the pump for a "rebuilt" unit out of NZ.
the customer is frustrated, i am frustrated.
i would be tempted to swap the E pump for a mechanical but the tranny is tied into a couple of the senors so that might cause even more problems.

best of luck with your baby.

Crushers

You got a thread going on the problem kzte?

Pete

Yep spoke to Paul at Westcoast - top boy - saved me a few quid

Has anyone done this - replaced the headlining on the inside roof - mine is mucky as hell - is it possible to take it out - wash it and reinsert it as mine is also hanging down so would need gluing back in place again?

G

somewhere on Mud the owner has a thread of everything he has tried.
it seems a common issue with Toyota "E" diesel engines, although it does seem to be more the automatics than the manuals that are experiencing the problems.

from what i have read, the KZT (no E) engines have a very good reputation among those that own them. i will say, i was impressed with the power.

the problem with this one is, once it is warmed up, it over fuels badly. when first fired up in the morning it runs super nice, 5 mins later and it runs powerful but over fuels. i feel it is a sensor on the pump but they all test well.

not sure where the thread is now, it will be in the diesel or the 70 sections...

The 1-KZT engine is about as bullet proof as you can get. Mines done 155,000 miles, doesn't burn oil or use water, starts instantly and runs smoothly from cold. It's emissions on the MoT test are well inside limits. From info from others with this engine, my experiences are normal.

The "E" series engine has no more power and torque, and according to one source, the electronics were fitted so that the engine would be more acceptable for use in the Colorado (90 series). Apparently the "judder" when you switch the engine off on a 70 series was considered detrimental to Colorado sales.
