Howdy to all reliable vehicle fans!

I am with you there, had many a sierra and escort in my time! where can i find dimensions for these? Parkers etc don't seem to understand these numbers!

I wouldn't be even be looking at any landcruisers if I was thinking about mpg. I pride myself knowing how much fuel my 4.2l burns. :)

i look at it as a tank a month, luckily i don't tend to go far.

Exactly, if you worry about mpg then maybe you're looking at the wrong vehicle. I only tend to use mine at weekends, I definitely wouldn't be commuting any distance in it.
Mine is used for towing, shooting and carrying stuff, I just fill it when it says it's thirsty.

I take your point, but I think you could fit all the people in the world who do not care AT ALL about MPG in one land cruiser!
If you said "Anyone who wants 40mpg from a car shouldn't consider the LC" i would have to agree entirely, as that's a fair statement as they will never get what they want out of it. I have never said I want xx mpg, just as MUCH as possible, WHILE OWNING A LC!!

I want a LC, that's my FIRST priority and one which won't change. But choosing the best one for MPG (and other points) just happens to be my decision criteria, and I think they are reasonable enough :)

How about a:

4.2 diesel 80 import?

Many only gave 5 seats but there are seven seat models with rear AC.

You will find the imports are generally in better condition body wise, and many have given up their rear seats so another option to fit the third row.

You will unlikely get front and rear lockers but as you said not a serious off reader.

So an 80 for ability, a 100 for slightly less ability but better comfort, MPG not so critical in such a big car, just ease up on the throttle.

I confess to being one of the believers that the 80 was the last true off roading machine from any manufacture.

Dave

Yes I am very much with you there, not through knowledge of LC, just through knowledge of every other car out there I have been through, and found exactly the same applies around similar dates with every other maker!
Having said that, I am not a proper offroader by any means, so comfort of the 100 will definitely probably do more for me than a slightly lower ability for off roading.

4.2 diesel import, is that what I search to find them or is there a model number? Do you know of any good forums or other places (aside from the usual ebay, auto trader etc) to keep an eye out?

The normal UK 80 diesel is known as HDJ80, The imports IIRC had a different model number.....................someone help me with this, was it HDJ81?

Usual places to buy, there are some people/companies that are known for selling crap at high prices, I am not in the UK and TBH probably forgot most of the dodgy dealer names?

Post up names and I am sure you will get the right advice however, as always take a knowledgeable friend who knows the model you are looking at, and of course caveat emptor.

Regards

Dave

When talking price, note that the 120 started life cheaper, sold as a lighter workload vehicle, and there are a lot of them around.

The platform is build on has been solid throughout ( apart from that injector recall...).

The other factor is that in the UK a large majority of 120s were bought as private vehicles and kept as such. Which is also partially responsible for the variations you see in condition of these vehicles.

If your thinking of running veg or bio forget the mpg now. Just buy a cruiser and enjoy it ;)

It's not that difficult really. Principally, the 40 series was the first Cruiser, since then there has been 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 150 and 200 That's the overall model genus. If you then take, say, a 95 it's a variant of the 90 range. A 125 is a variant of the 120 series. A 105 isn't a variant on it's own really, it's a variant of the 100 series.

There are a lot of variants. Especially the 70 series. The numbers tell you things like if it's a 3 door or a 5 door long wheelbase. That's all.

Amazon was simply a way that Toyota tried to sort out the mess when the 90 series and 80 series were on sale at the same time both badged Landcruiser. One was £28,000 and one was £56,000. People didn't get it. So the Amazon was born. Then as the 80 Amazon went out and the 100 Amazon came in, oddly people were even more confused. I wonder why.

haha, thanks Chris, a useful quick history lesson there and all is clear now :)

"If your thinking of running veg or bio forget the mpg now. Just buy a cruiser and enjoy it" - Cheers Karl, I am actually thinking exactly that. My favourite vehicle is the 100 series Amazon. I think I will just decide on that and sod the fuel, it will only motivate me to unpack the processor and get my arse in gear learning how to make it myself!

100s - Not sure whether to spend 6-8k on a 150k miles plus Amazon, or 10-11 tops on one with well under 100k. I have seen one with 78k miles on it, drove it home for family to play with for half hour. It's bloody mint at least on surface, its wax oiled underneath and at a very quick look it doesn't appear rust under that and given the mileage I would say it was done early in its life if not when brand new. But its asking price of 12k so too much really but i think they will move on it as nobody can get finance for it due to age. However on a 1 hour test drive to nip it home for a bit, I noticed a fair list of faults which i would hope the dealer will sort before i buy (as for top whack i want EVERYTHING working properly)..

steering wheel rake control not working (dud motor probably)

horrible squeak by driver's right ear when driving (may seem small but loud and annoying as hell)

rear right wheel seized up occasionally, after reversing off drive to take it back it squealed down the road a few meters before apparently unseizing

centre arm rest catch not working so it kept flipping up when driving

horrible wobble from steering wheel (whole truck vibrates) when braking

hefty clunk like kick up the arse when it changes gear, that could have been due to seized wheel maybe

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201706216652568 - I was quite interested in this, especially being the rare manual, but now I am considering biodiesel I may stick with the lazy man's auto option. Also I only just noticed this is the GX instead of the VX which I wanted. Maybe someone else will agree this looks a bargain, unless the curiously absent pictures of the interior let it down severely
