Injector Swap

Made this a "Sticky" thread as I have just spent 30mins searching for it :laughing-rolling::laughing-rolling:

So just pulled the injector trim values and they are all within the +-3 threshold.... I still think they need doing though:

Mine were a lot worse than that on the feedback values, one at 4 another at 5 when cold and still well out even with the temp up at 80. With the recon ones in, it's still not the quietest of diesels, but the knock has gone.

Coolant only 20C, so that's a cold reading, I don't think that's too bad. Need to see numbers warm too. If number 1 is still -2.4 then it's not a catastrophe but might be worth starting to plan a change. Mine were +/- 4 to 5 by the time I did them, they were loads better after though!

Also look at the injection volume when warm, under 9 is great, under 12 is survivable but again, start planning.

Right, the warm values do not look too bad at all...

Again, once warm the injection volume values look ok. What would impact this number?

It's the warm numbers I'd be more concerned about. From what I've read from some knowledgeable folk on PradoPoint you want injectors within +/- 3 when warm. Yours are in spec when cold. Happy days.

@Rob Cowell as I am about to remove the injectors to check the seals, I am thinking about replacing them (even though they are within tolerances). You mention above that you got yours from Specialist Diesel Services, do you have a link to them, and which ones are the correct injectors as a casual search reveals there are a few different choices?

Hi @TonyP. Mine were from here https://www.commonraildiesels.com/
I just bought the injectors within the age range shown, but I don't think the 2000-2009 range one existed when I got mine. I cross checked the part number on Toyodiy for my VIN and made sure it was listed as covered by the injectors I bought (click on the pics to see the details). Might be worth calling them to find out what those 2000-2009 ones are though, maybe something newer / better.

Note, mine came with copper washers, which of course you do not want!

Also make sure you have torque wrenches that cover the ranges you need for the socket sizes you need before you start. I can't remember which bolt it was now but I needed to get a 17mm on my 1/4" wrench to get low enough torque. No big deal but I didn't have a 1/4" - 3/8" adaptor to hand and had to nip out and get one.

Thanks Rob. I did find this site, but wanted to check with you. Firm believer on going on recommendations.

And I do have a couple of torque wrenches, so should be covered. Just ordered some crow feet spanners... any excuse for new tools :)

I've been following this guy from Australia for while.. he specialises in the 1kd ft and his channel is full of info and knowledge. His channel name is "fourby4diesel" and a sound guy.

An example of content..

I bought my injector kit from this guy. Also the big front end job kit.

Well tackled this job today, and was pretty straight forward. Followed the guide that Rob linked to.

Got caught out again by hydolocking cylinder 1. This happened last time I changed the injector seals. The area I work on had quite a incline, so when pulling injector 1, the cylinder fills up with oil.

After taking it all apart again, and lifting injector 1 slightly I turned the motor over which pushed the oil out.

Reassembled and codded in the new injectors and after about 30 seconds of cranking it started up.

Sounds and runs much quieter and smoother. Hopefully that will resolve it going into limp mode..... time will tell.

@Rob Cowell how have your injectors faired over the years? Looking at doing mine in the next couple of weeks and commonraildiesel seem to be quite a lot cheaper than other sources.

Also looking at the parts diagram on partsouq it refers to type A and type B injectors, anyone know what thats about? Mines a 2005 LC3, I know I could phone commonaildiesel but I thought I'd ask here first :D

I called them in the end to make sure I got the correct ones. It's a pain to take it all apart just to find out that they are incorrect...

As a side note, 2 months and about 500miles later (covid...) It's all good and it's not gone into limp mode since...

I'm now on 198000 miles. Think I changed at 120000. Haven't hooked up Techstream for a while. Had to give my old laptop back to a previous employer and haven't tried to reinstall. But engine is quiet from cold still, and my gear stick doesn't throb at idle; both things "fixed" after the swap. I have tried to use "posh" diesel since I did the swap, but certainly not religiously.

Type A / Type B, no idea sorry. I looked up my part number on toyodiy and cross referenced to the place I bought them. Just checked, and my chassis number shows with only Type A on Toyodiy.

Thanks both, given the feedback from you both a call to commonraildiesel is in order.

Hi Rob,
About to tackle mine at some point this winter, have you noticed any benefits on fuel economy
Struggling to get more than 22/gal and as we all know fuel is not cheap!

Thanks
