Introduction, oil leak and inner axle seals…

Hello everyone, I’ve recently purchased a 1988 H4 60 series and couldn’t be happier! I’m based in South Somerset and can’t wait to hit the beaches with it next summer.

There are however a couple of issues to keep me busy over the winter, the first and foremost being an oil leak from the front near side hub…
It appears to be the inner axle seal which I’ve heard is a pretty common problem with older trucks as the shaft becomes worn. I’ve seen a couple of aftermarket seals out there which claim solve this problem. Has anyone had experience with this? I’m looking at the Marlin Crawler seal in particular.
I was also thinking I’d rebuild the hubs whilst doing the seals. Can anyone recommend a rebuild kit?

Many thanks

Hugh

Hello hugh,
Good to have another 60 on board.
Yes the hubs are a common thing.
Not sure if you can get a Terrain Tamer rebuild kit where you are but they are excellent. As you said, make sure surfaces are good where the seals run or you will end up doing the job twice.
Its not too difficult if you are used to working on things, especially since u tube videos can guide you. Would recommend getting a stout brass rod to knock out races and help with the cone washers too

Hello Hugh and welcome...

Exactly as Ben says but keep the shims exactly as you find them and replace them in the same upper or lower location. With luck these will be as per the factory assuming that previous rebuilders have replaced them where they found them.

Regards,

Rodger

Many thanks Rodger and Ben, I’ll try and get a Terrain Tamer kit. Is it worth paying the premium for the heavy duty kit?

I think the heavy duty kit includes the wheel bearings too, worth doing too if you don’t know what state yours are in
