Hi there,
I am new here so please bear with me :)
I have a 1993 Diesel Land Cruiser Prado EX Turbo and I have just found out that someone has tampered with the ECU (before we bought it) and now it is useless and my lovely car which we thought was indestructable, is now off the road. We need to find a new ECU and it is proving rather hard. Does anyone have any ideas?
I live in Malawi, South East Africa, so basically in the middle of nowhere and although there a lots of Prados out here, they are all on the road - which is great, but not great for finding spares!
Anyone know where we can find one?
Another idea: would an ECU from a different model Land Cruiser work?

Thanks,

Zomba :)

Is yours a Auto or Manual? I believe they're different ECU's depending on trans. All cruiser,surfs,4runner,hiaces that run the 1KZT-E engine will have the same ECU you can use. Have a look on ebay.

Secondly, if your ECU isn't in terrible condition you might want to get it fixed at a electricians shop/ECU specialist.

Hi Beau,

Ours is an automatic transmission - the problem is that we live in Malawi and no one is qualified (or trustworthy enough) to fix the ECU. We were told that each box is tailor-made for each car - Are you sure that another car model ECU with the same engine will work? Someone told me yesterday that if we used the ECU from another model, we would have to change the injector pump, or something like that...
Unfortunately, I am not mechanically minded and I am kind of working blind here. Our mechanic has found many boxes but each one has been different, had a different number of pins or only had one circuit board inside, whereas ours has two.
I haven't tried looking for an ECU for the engine number specifically but will give it a go.
If you have any other advice, I am happy to hear it :)

Thanks so much for your help so far,

Zomba

Hi again,

I have another question regarding my ECU problems... What is the difference in between the KZT-TE engine (mine) and the 1KZ-TE engine? I ask because I found an ECU for the 1KZ-TE and the part number is nearly the same: ie: 89661 (same)/3D100 (different) - it is for an automatic transmission, it has the right number of pins... But I just want to check.
Beau, can you help?
Anyone else?

thanks all :)

Welcome to the club Zomba.

If you dont manage to source another ECU/get yours fixed.

You could always fit a manual fuel pump from a 1KZ-T. :icon-wink:

1KZ-T = manual fuel pump & No ECU.
1KZ-TE = electric fuel pump & ECU.

have you the possibility to text or speak to the uk? I know a guy who fixes/replaces ecu he might be able to help. he is a very good auto electrician who knows his stuff about ecus

The correct engine code is 1KZT-E. The only alternative is the 1KZT but that uses no ECU. These ECU's aren't paired to anything, at least I'm not aware of anything like that. People have swapped out ECU's before with no problems. So with that said, just source one that has a auto box like yours and you'll be fine. The auto ECU has two boards, one for the engine, one for the box, both in one ECU box.

The one you found sounds like it should work! Best of luck.

The alternative may be to replace the faulty board. It depends where the fault lies of course. It may be worth a trial. If it fits, can it be fried by putting the wrong one in? It's possible I suppose but I doubt it. You could always check the boards inside, if they are physically the same then I would have thought you're on to s winner. [emoji4]

Hello Zomba,
I am in Kenya and have the exact same problem!
Someone tempered with the ECU before I bought the car and it has now stopped working altogether.
I have had it shipped to an ECU Repair place in the Netherlands and was told that it is beyond repair.

Did you manage to find a replacement computer?
If so, where?
Or did you go with a computer from a different model?

I was also told by a mechanic whom I trust that I should only replace the computer with the exact same one.

Many thanks!
