Landcruiser lj70 [creepycruiser]

Great work Victor! The om603 is a great motor for the 70. The only way to get the job done is by getting right in there! Lol

Yep, pretty much!!

Got the axle truss done, and mounts for the upper links!

What'd you guys reckon, any more reinforcements? Im thinking maybe a piece of metal above everything to give it kind of a roof to hold the tabs together, or possibly just cut some triangles and weld in behind where the bushes will sit?

Some drain holes might be an idea, but that’s refinement.

Cracking job going on here Victor

Dont need no drain holes, it's welded shut, and that 10mm hole is going to be welded ;)

Maybe not just my opinion Victor, but all closed boxes should be vented and where there's open catchments, they should have drain holes.

It depends on how long you want it to last, but you need strength on this bad boy, so I wouldn't risk losing any to flaking rust on the inside.

Your call, of course :icon-wink:

As usual in the weekends it's head down and full steam ahead..

Just got started on the first lower mount

Got all the links done this weekend and started measuring for the axle..

Started off by doing a jig, so i'd get all 4 equal length and joints placed correctly

Which they needed, with 1m links the upper ones got outside of the frames, so cut them off and settled for 800mm instead

Not sure how to do the rear-end tho.. Gonna extend it to like the axle or just behind, and make it narrower, but i need ideas! Feel free to use below picture to give me ideas on it!

Looking good.

Cant believe how much mud was in your chassis! :wtf:

Do you have access to a tube bender?

I think doing the back end in tube would look much better than using square section steel.

Yeah i know, like 50cm in though it was significantly less mud.. But i've planned to try and flush the frame all the way..

Yeah, i have one of these cheap, simple benders, so pipe bending is something i can do.. Kind of torn between cutting off more of the frame and build with tubing instead, or do the box frame all around again.. There will be some sort of cage thing, and tube work in the rear anyhow so.. GOSH DANGIT

Edit, maybe cut the old frame off just after the 4link mounts and do tubing from there..

Santa was early this year!

Wonder what this can be..

Did some nicer endings to the old frame, also wanted more support for the tube, so cut oen the frame 10cm more on the top and welded the tube there..

Not going to be so active in the garage for the next couple of weeks though, as on Wednesday im going in for Eye surgery, gon' get me some of those cool Laser eyes, so i can sell the plasmacutter again :laughing-rolling:

No, but seriously, I am doing eye surgery on Wednesday though, so there'll be some downtime from the garage..

This weekend started just great..

Finally got my ring and pinions from lowrange, so started on that today, didn't get very far before i started cussing.. The damn thing wont fit.. :angry-screaming:

Started doing some research and finally found on justdifferentials.com one interesting line on R&P from Nitro
"If you have stock 4.88 gears you will need to swap to a V6 3rd" Written NOWHERE on lowrange.. :snooty:

Well fuck. I have no idea if this is true, i have emailed Lowrange to get to shine some light on the problem, if it turns out true i dont know if i can even use the diff or the R&P in the V6 housing, im guessing i can, but i dont know.. And if i can and get a V6 casing (which is beefier from what i understand) it is $300

Other option could be to get a High pinion front diff as they fit the rear too ( I have one in the rear in the Zook) But if i do, do i still use the reverse-cut that the HP has, or can i use these normal-cut gears for a low-pinion..? Guy that built the zook thought he used the rear R&P (Normal-cut) on the HP when he fitted it to the rear, but as it is 10 years ago he built it he wasn't sure..

I have also read about guys telling not to fit HP in the rear as the oilslinger rotates in the wrong direction, and you get the load on the weaker coast side instead of the drive side, but i cant seem to get a grip on it all with normal-cut gears, if that would even work..

Anyone??

Sorry Victor cant help. But I do aspire to learn how to decypher what you said and truly understand it!!

The v6 diff is the same diff that comes in the rears of hilux surfs so is pretty easily sourced, the stock 4.88 is a funny thing as the pinion is slightly offset to one side so yep can't be used with after market gears,

Hairy, Ok, but, this new R&P should drop into a V6 carrier right? And the Airlocker too? Or am i royally fucked?

The reason im changing R&P

Not too bad i guess after 5 years of abuse... :icon-biggrin:

So, since i caouldnät get the diff done, i got some other small jobs done today.. First was the oil return from the turbo, first drilled a 4mm guide hole, followed by a 15mm hole, which i then threaded with 3/8" pipe thread, nervous moment drilling into the block! :wtf:

Replaced all the bolts in the rear axle holding the diff for allen head screws that you bolt in from the inside, it's a complete kit you can buy from lowrange.. Had to leave 2 bolts though as i have the half-shafts in..
