Hi Everyone,

The LJ70 had been sorn for a few years so needed an MOT.

Took it to the MOT garage today. I am expecting a long read when it's finished! One thing I noticed driving it was the steering had quite a lot of play. I am assuming it's the steering box. Do you guys know a good place to get one? Also the engine won't shut off unless the lights are off its that normal?

Cheers,

Simon

There's an adjuster on the steering box.. on the top theres a 19mm nut and the threaded part is a flat screwdriver slot.

Just don't do it up too tight, adjust it so there's a minimal amount of play on the steering wheel. Then cycle the steering wheel to check there aren't any tight spots.

It'll be as good as new!

Can't recall anything complicated on my 70 series such as an inhibitor to prevent the engine being stopped with the lights still on, wondering if there might have been an ignition or stop solenoid wiring fault sometime in its life and someone plugged in a feed that got it going.
Check the oil level in the box if and when you adjust the free play up as described above.

Thanks iwan-t24! Is that adjustment possible without a ramp?

About the engine not turning off with lights on. The previous owner has told me it was rewired recently so probably a connection mistake.

Another thing I noticed was very slow windscreen wipers. I am assuming a new motor is required.

Cheers!

Might be worth feeding some thin oil down the wiper spindles and linkage, it might there's something running dry putting extra strain on the motor and mechanism.

With the steering box adjustment... to put the axle on axle stands and easier to take just the driverside wheel off for better access..

It failed the MOT. But only on a wheel front wheel bearing, windscreen washer and horn so could have been a lot worse so worth the gamble.

Will still adjust the steering box as it sounds quite easy.

Another question.: The previous owner has replaced the turbo with a supercharger. It runs ok but sounds like it is over fuelled (pinking). Is it possible to adjust the fuel air mixture manually? Or can anyone recommend a engine tuner near Berkshire?

Will definitely try a bit of WD40

It won't shut off as it feeds shut off selenoid on the pump from headlight + . Used to be a trick back in the day to not forget the lights. Do not assume that they have found all the plays in the suspension when doing an mot. First thing to do, get someone to keep turning steering wheel left-right when you lay under the car. Look especially at panhard bushes, there shouldn't be any play there. Go for tracking first as they feel"loose" when it's out.
Wiper motor will be ok, mechanism will be seized on the spindles only way is to take it out, take circlips off, slide them out of mounts and clean/grease. If you look under wiper arm you will see if they are on an angle and the casing is worn. If yes just replace mechanism.
Did he put a boost gauge there so you would see what pressure you're running? Is the wastegate on that charger plumbed in properly?

Thanks qbartx I will investigate the wiper spindles.

About the engine stuff I literally only picked up the LJ70 up today and drove it straight to the MOT test garage. I only have a basic understanding of turbo and superchargers/ waste gates hence why I need help from a specialist. In the meantime I am going to read up on subject... Gives me something to do during lock-down.

Post a few close up photos around the charger. How much it's blowing mainly depends from size of the pulleys.

Supercharger on LJ70...

Anyone know where the horn relay is located on an LJ70. The electrical box I can see it's the external power box with some fuses in.

Cheers

I just checked in the manual and there isn't one .

The horn doesn't work. Checked the fuse, horn connections, I guess next is the steering wheel switch. Unless there is a known fault?

That power box you have found I is not the main fuse/relay box. That IIRC has large capacity for winch etc.
The main box is behind a pull off panel by drivers right foot/throttle pedal, take a look in there. All the information on what's in there is marked on the reverse of the pull off panel.

Can't really see anything on these photos that's why i said close up, especially bypass area( vac actuator on outside of charger).
Did you actually put power to the horns see if they work? Never had the relay go but it must be one of the ones under steering column. Unbolt the vent and have a look, it will probably be one of the funny "can" type relays

This LC is becoming a lot more work than I thought when I bought it!!!

So far I have had the alternator rebuilt and am putting the engine back to stock by putting the CT20 back on... However I just realized I have the later 2LT-2 Engine. I believe they are better with the cast iron head and over head cam and less prone to the heads going?

The roof lining and carpet are out to try and find the source of the water ingress. It smells better already . I noticed some rust under the sound deadening material so chipped it away to discover holes, lots of holes. Both front foot wells and at the base of the wheel arches in the back. Plus holes near the seat belt mountings in the back and near the back door. Also sills and back of rear wheel arches. In fact there is so much it would cost a fortune to have it all fixed so I am going to have to learn how to weld. Will at least I will have something to do during lock-down

But back to the engine. All the pipes are connected for the turbo I am just waiting for a new front down pipe as the old one didn't fit. Have been having fun and games getting that. Two places said they had it then didn't. I ended up having to get it from Germany from Autodoc. But they are rather slow at delivering (still waiting after 3 weeks). But got it for £90 rather than £180 from Toyota.

Back to the water ingress. The windscreen seal is one culprit is pooling out. Another is the seal between the roof and the sunroof box. Drains are all free running btw.

Also looks like water is coming from the back of the firewall. I guess this could be the window seal too or its there any chance the drain for the scuttle could have holes???

That's it for now....

I am looking forward to getting all this stuff done so I can get onto the fun stuff.

Cheers,

Simon
