Noise after new clutch fit....

Interesting the comment on Valeo clutches, I cannot comment on their fitment in an LC however, they are considered the mutts nuts here in Spain.

I tend to farm out anything heavy these days, and am always offered a choice of manufacturer, OE is often LUK, but Valeo being as good but at a lower cost.

I let my customer choose, as I am honest about not doing the work myself and they pay direct, great PR.

Regards

Dave

I bought a clutch kit from my main dealers a couple of years ago. Including both bearings iirc it was £380. Let me know if you want a upto date price for comparison.
Unfortunately imo a main dealer will be a premium on price, but by no means guaranteeing premium workmanship.

I will be publicly gobsmacked if the box is at fault. I think MT have it bang on. The springs can't resonate when at high neutral revs or when there is drive. There's nothing in the box to make that noise if it's a breakage. CG is right however there is a dose of speculation.

Was the pressure plate doweled to the flywheel in the usual design?

The pressure plate was dowelled Frank, as per the original and will only go on one way. If you offer it up to the flywheel the wrong way round the bolt holes don’t line up.

What are the part No’s on your components CG? I have part No’s and prices from Simon Holton and they are slightly different to those on Toyo DIY, more up to date I suspect but I decided, in my wisdom, to go with non OEM!

I hope this is the case Frank so (another) new clutch will fix it. If so my money’s on it being damaged somehow during instal as others have used the same without issue so it’s a tried and tested product.

The clutch is back at base. I will be there tomorrow, ill have a look for you . No problem.

Asked the opinion of the the MOT tester today on the box noise and he reckoned, possibly, release bearing rattling on the tube it rides on or clutch arm vibrating on its pivot point. Not convinced as the arm is under tension from the slave cylinder even without pedal pressure, plus I think it would do it hot or cold.
Then took it to another gearbox specialist and right away he said gear chatter.
Just moving the gear lever forward slightly to 1st gear without pressing the clutch stopped the noise. Apparently doing so loads the gears slightly stopping the chatter. He also said it’s down to the damper springs but also said a new OEM clutch may not cure it. He then showed me a cutaway brand new gear box and demonstrated the chatter by quickly rotating the input shaft to any fro, the noise sounded identical. Dual mass flywheels fitted to more modern vehicles eliminate this problem on clutch replacement. He also said the noise might reduce and even disappear altogether with use as the new springs weaken.

Also visited the local Toyota dealer for a new clutch price. They were aware of the MLA loss avoidance scheme run by Toyota but said it wouldn’t apply here as the parts/replacement cost was discounted. £815 drive in, drive out price.
Going to chew on it for a while.

I wonder if you altered your idle rpm slightly higher or lower it might stop the noise.

I remember now in about 1982 I was given a sneak preview of the new Aston Martin 460 bhp v8 Vantage. They had a job with customer complaints due to noisy idle gear chatter which went at higher rpm and drive. Sounds like it could be the same problem. I never got to know if they solved it.

Sorry it took all day.

Might give this a shot Frank. 1100rpm (the vanishing point) is a bit high but it gradually reduces as the revs rise so it might make it a bit less annoying. The gearbox guy I saw today also mentioned slightly thicker oil might help but could also give gear shifting issues so might steer clear of that one.

On the MOT front it flew through as usual. The certificate is the new style. Don’t know if he applied the new rules (I suspect not) but who cares, it’s done for another year.

Towpack, Does the noise go if you just rest your foot lightly on the clutch pedal just a quarter or half inch, i ask this as i had a new clutch in my on tranny & after it was fitted i had a similar noise, i know it's a bit heath robinson & an old van but i wrapped a bungy chord around the pedal arm and hooked to a couple of points on the bulkhead, just enough to take the slack movement & jobs been a good un for the last 15k

No JM, the clutch has to be fully depressed to disconnect drive to the box.
There’s no slack in the pedal operation at all.

Perhaps lower revs at idle then? The 1100 rpm will be reached when the gears are under load then so you won't get the noise. The resonance may be a bit like a tuning fork and be very fussy over rpm so less may work as well as more rpm at idle.

I have to say I had the same problem with my milner replacement. Have put it down to selectors rattling but no other issues except I notice the noise. However chaps, we are not any further on than when the first post was made! I would now suggest applying some lateral thinking and begin to look for the solution in the bottom of a whisky glass Towpack

You’re absolutely right IRLGW. Much speculation and suggestions (appreciated by the way) but no progress other than two different experts have diagnosed the same issue which seems to be more one of annoyance rather than a hard fault or sign of impending doom. Without a guarantee that another clutch will definitely cure it then pulling the box again is an expensive gamble. I’m going to experiment with the idle speed and do as suggested today and put some miles on it. I’ve still got £200 worth of new rear brakes sat in the garage waiting to be fitted so I’ll crack on with that. Mine’s a G&T by the way.

:obscene-drinkingbu: Cheers fellas!

Dammit its only monday...

TP don't forget you've friends on here willing to help. You've contributed enough over the years to have favours stacked up. I'm sure that there's a way to get that box off in the blink of an eye. Wobble bars, impact gun and a ramp are all that's needed.

Thanks Chris, much appreciated and I’ll bear it in mind.
