Senator John F. Kennedy later described his rule: "Fulgencio Batista murdered 20,000 Cubans in 7 years - a greater proportion of the Cuban population than the proportion of Americans who died in both World Wars, and he turned democratic Cuba into a complete police state - destroying every individual liberty. Yet, our aid to his regime, and the ineptness of our policies, enabled Batista to invoke the name of the United States in support of his reign of terror.

Administration spokesmen publicly praised Batista - hailed him as a stanch ally and a good friend - at a time when Batista was murdering thousands, destroying the last vestiges of freedom, and stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the Cuban people, and we failed to press for free elections."

On this day in 1879, legendary physicist Albert Einstein was born in Germany. While most famous for his scientific theories, Einstein was also a socialist, and wrote an excellent explanation of the capitalist system and its inherent flaws .
Describing how wealth and power is concentrated he said
" The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature. The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights."

On this day in 1991, the abolition of the poll tax in the UK was announced, following a mass non-payment campaign and widespread rioting. The hated tax, introduced by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government, charged the working class the same as the rich as there was a charge for every individual in a household. People up and down the country self-organised an unprecedented campaign which resulted in over 17 million people refusing to pay, with thousands of people clogging the country's court system. It was later replaced by the council tax, which charged rates based on house value.

It wasn't a poll tax, it was titled a community charge it was just labelled a poll tax by the nasty media drumming up ill feeling by the public and by God didn't it work! all those riots sold papers.
People objected because they thought it made them liable to pay rates charges but anyone in council housing paid rates if only they looked in their rent books as I did in my mothers rent book, it was all itemised, they would see what they paid in 'Rates' (This was checked before the community charge was abolished)

People objected because what they paid increased massively. Instead of being based on the value of your house it was calculated on the number of people living in it .it meant that a family living in a council house with 2 kids over the age of 18 would pay more than a millionaire retired couple. A nasty policy by a nasty party.
" An opinion poll conducted in 1990 indicated that 78% of the population opposed the tax."
