Paper tax discs

I bet there's a big loss of revenue because refunds are automatic now when most people never bothered when they sold the car for parts .

I would quite like it if they did return. Easy to see who hasn’t coughed up and for some reason, despite paying through the nose on fuel duty, I feel a bit cheated when I pay for road tax without anything to show for it. £93m would fill quite a few potholes. I’ve got a disc of that grinning monkey selfie in my holder.

Unfortunately the road tax doesn't pay for anything to do with roads. Taxes on fuel does. Just another scam unfortunately.

Road tax used to pay for roads, I remember reading many many years ago that the first politician to use that revenue for something other than roads was Winston Churchill.

Vehicle tax was introduced in the 1888 budget and the current system of excise duty applying specifically to motor vehicles was introduced in 1920. This excise duty was ring-fenced for road construction and was paid directly into a special Road Fund from 1920 until 1937 after which it was treated as general taxation. Even during this period the majority of the cost of road building and improvement came from general and local taxation due to the tax being too low for the upkeep of the roads.

So it was used for roads and supplemented by local taxation.

x2. I still have my old 2014 disc on display and just feel reluctant to take it out somehow. Is that weird?

My tax, MOT and insurance all pretty much coincide. I use the disc as a reminder as to when they're all due.

Not weird at all mine is still there too.

The £93M reduction could also be in part the £0 and £20.00/30.00 per year tax band cars which are now popular....
