the tread on my cooper SSTs is now down to about 5mm & are also badly cracked up around the tread blocks so i'm wondering about how effective they really are compared to say some brand new ATs.At the moment i run MTs in the winter & a road pattern M&S type tyre in the summer. The MTs are great in fresh , powdery snow but not too clever on ice or wet n muddy roads - the M&S tires are clearly better so are a set of ATs the way to go?

Yes,

Go for AT.

Make sure they have the snowflake symbol in the mountain shape.

I would thoroughly recommended the BF Goodrich AT tyre, very good in snow and on the road. Only downside is the price.

I can also recommend the BF AT's ive been running them 3 years now and have been excellent in all weathers. i would say they are about 40% worn and ive driven about 30k miles.

This is the only tyre you need.
As far as AT tyres go, these really are hard to beat as an all rounder.

I let you all guess what they are.

Ive been quoted €160.00 each & €10.00 for fitting for BFG ATs so will probably go for em - MTs are great at work in the woods or on a mountain but i usually have a hand winch with me 6 there is always some dirty great skidder around for a tow
