Poor Service From Main Dealer

So my 120 had the MOT test last week and failed on a split CV boot, which I asked the MOT place (not Toyota) to change the part as I had no time to do so, and they then passed it.

It then went for a service yesterday and I get a call from the Toyota stealer with the following noted:
  • Pollen filer needs replacing, it really dirty.
  • Front break pads 100% worn and disks are rusty and have a lip (pads are a year old, I changed them myself)
  • Records show diff oil has not been changed
  • Similar with the Aircon, no record of it being serviced.

As it had passed it's MOT I told them to not to do anything else on the car, he asked why and I told him I know the pollen filer is good, cause I (well Crispin) changed it only two weeks ago. He starts talking about the brakes, but as I was running out of time I told him I would chat to him when collecting the 120 later.

So I go and pick up the car, and he sheepishly says that the pollen filter statement was a mistake on his part as he misunderstood what the techie had put this down on the sheet and that they have now checked it and it is indeed ok, I just nod and think what a cock.

He bleats on about the brakes and that these are worn and £300 to do the front axle and I basically told him to bugger off. I questioned as to why the independent MOT place had not picked up on this brake wear issue, and he excused it as they did not/could not check this properly as this is the inner pads so hard to see.

So then I asked him about changing the diff oils and why this was not part of a service routine, and he says it's a top up only thing, fair enough I suppose, but considering I bought the vehicle from them and they have serviced it every year since, I would have thought this would have been thought about sooner. Similar story with the aircon.

From my perspective this really is a breech of trust issue, I caught them out in a lie and he tried to cover it up with some lame excuse. I really can't trust anything they say and I will check
the brakes this weekend to establish who is telling the porky here. Really pissed off with them for once again trying to extort money out of me, so much so that I have now cancelled the service plan with them and will be looking elsewhere for future servicing.

Oh and on a positive note my tires are good and the LC is in really good condition for it's age... well thank fook for that!

/RANT OVER

Tony

Well at least its all MOT'd for another year. shame about Toyota sounds like they are down on the monthly sales target to me.

NEVER ever trust a main stealer, there all con artists, most people just take there word & cough up.

Helen paid Hyundai about 1500 quid and failed an mot at an independent garage a week later on all the parts supposedly replaced . They claimed a clerical error .

My main dealer promised me £250 for every hilux referral that turned in to a sale for them.

My mate bought one.

Dealer denied offering me anything of the sort........

Transpires their invoice was £4000 short.

Dealer phoned me up and asked if I could have a word with my mate 'cos he's telling them its tough - he paid what they invoiced.

I told the dealer my mate has given me £250 for the money I saved him on a new hilux :)

Nice…would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall.

It could have been worse . . . . It could have been a VW  .

Probably, nice new showroom/service area reception that they have so I suppose they need to recover the funds somehow!

True and they do try it on every year (to be fair Honda do this same) but this time I caught them in a lie. And in fact I never do any of the extras they point out. Last year one of the tires had damage to the side wall (Mrs and pavements) so they failed it on the MOT. I then swapped the spare in, and they then commented that I did not need to change all 4 tires!

I defo need to check the pads even only for peace of mind, but if they are worn the MOT company is going to get a earful!

The criteria for MOT IIRC is that the brakes stop the vehicle. They don't measure pad thickness just put it on the rolling brake tester, or in my case take it up the road with a brake tester in the passenger footwell.

The problem is a lot of dealers are targeted and bonused with upsell, brakes, tyres and service items are the main ones.

As for all main dealers being con artists I disagree! I work in a main dealer!! Yes there's some out there that just want shooting but don't Tar us all with that brush!

I do my job because I enjoy what I do, I'm not in it to rip people off. I quite honestly earn good money without having to think about up selling stuff, we're not targeted or bonused on it but on customer satisfaction (not that I do service work, last one was only due to it being a hybrid car)

Tbh decent techs are hard to find nowadays and a lot of places don't pay decent money so they get exactly what they pay for!! Unfortunately that can then effect the customer.

Seen some shocking stuff from independents too, poorly maintained, shoddy repairs and get quite a few cars in bits that they've had a go at finding faults with.

Oh and mot for brake pads is a visual inspection if can see them, 1.5mm min thickness

1.5 mm would give an advisory as its the minimum. Not a lot of pad left at that. Its visual though so dont actually measure them.

I have had pretty spotty luck with jemca in this area. What i have realised it's that these guys are really just curing corners and ring to make as much money as possible of the regular work. I.e servicing and mot.

For specific focused tasks they are much better than the random non specialist mechanic.

I recon its down to luck finding a workshop with mechanics who like their work, whether it's a main dealer or not. IMO good work comes from those who have a conscience and a pride in their work.

Unfortunately, the only way to find a good place is to start somewhere and work your way through them till you hit lucky, unless you can get a recommendation.

Diff oil in a 120 is supposed to be changed every 20k miles. Transfer box oil is inspection / top-up. I never changed or inspected either in my 90 and either the transfer box or front diff seized, wrecking the other. I do these religiously with my 120.

Diff and transfer box oils are on my list, so will be done soon.

This is not what I would call 100% worn, more like 50%

I would not be swapping thoose pads if they were mine, plenty of life left in them.

I always thought (I will probably be corrected on this point) that the the slots in the pad as can be seen in the photo was the lowest sensible safe limit of the pad, same as wear bars on tyres??

Yeah not 100% worn. We recommend a min of 3mm tbh but at 3mm I wouldn't tell a customer they're 100% worn. They're at 3mm and how many miles etc they do will influence how soon i recommend replacement

Got to agree on what Gary820 says as that would be my answer.

Well again for me they got it wrong. Clearly worn, but not 100%. I am still at loss as to why they thought that it was a good idea to take this approach with me.

Not having a go at all dealers, just thought worthwhile sharing my experience. I am still undecided if it is actually worth the effort of writing to the main dealer or Toyota themselves, problem is, what is it I want from them? What I do know, is I wont be back there, apart perhaps to collect some parts through our favourite spares man.
