Power steering pump leaking

So I noticed some hydraulic fluid leaking from somewhere about 18 months ago and after a brief inspection found it to be coming from the power steering pump. Its not a serious leak, and i've got by purely by monitoring the level in the reservoir and topping it up every now and again, however with a bit of time on my hands its probably time to fix it.

I know there is a really good thread by Rob on 'How to rebuild a power steering pump on 1H engines' which I assume applies to the 1HZ engine in my 105.

My question is - how difficult a job is this? does it require any special tools, and does the system need to be bleed?

My mechanical skills are limited to fairly basic stuff, radiator change, alternator change, brake pads and the like. I am keen to do some more difficult stuff but don't want to run before I can walk.

Options are to remove the PSP myself and send it off to a specialist company to rebuild, or remove it and rebuild it myself.

Any thoughts much appreciated?

Cheers

Nick

I know that Trevor at Freedom 4x4 can do this job. as he did it only last month. It's possible that he could even do it on an exchange basis. It depends if you can be without the vehicle for a couple of days. Hard to say if you could do it yourself Nick, it's a question of how good you are on the spanners. If you like, you can get the parts, come round and we can do it together - so we can have two heads on it not just one.

I actually do have a spare pump if it all goes t*** up.

Ive had no end of leaks on my PS for various reasons over the years. The only thing I've learned is a little leak gets bigger and often very rapidly towards the 'end'.

I've just had a leaking return pipe blow and what started as a drip became a full on draining-the-system-as-fast-as-you-can-pour-it-in type leak.

I then ran the pump dry for 110 km which I'm told has done damage to the pump (and my bloody shoulders).

Got the truck back now, and the steering feels great again, maybe one day I'll replace the pump, but no rush.

I think I'm trying to suggest getting it fixed one way or another is probably a good idea.

Hmmm, I've got the kit so I had better do mine sooner rather than later then.

Thanks Guys. Will get on this ASAP as the last thing I need is for it to turn into an major leak and end up running it dry......

From my experience on the HZJ 80, no bleeding necessary. As the ATF circulates, any air gets drawn off in the reservoir can.
