Hi all
As can be gathered fom my last posts, I am in the process of rebuilding a R151 gearbox and tx case from my 76 . I am aware of the problems which seem to plauge these boxes and they seem to be, lubriation, shoddy clearance setup from the factory and towing in 5th gear. Soft bearing retainers and thrust washers also add to the bad reputation.
Taking tips from all the rebuild posts and u tubes from shops who specialise in beefing up these boxes, can give one the ilusion that a good job can be done in your own workshop, so who am i to buck the trend.
Our local guru has let slip that he removes the bearing seals and uses TF454 oil in the box and transfer case, and along with precise clearance settings, goes along way to producing a good reliable box.

Thoughts on the oil and bearing seals and some of your own experiances please!!
regards
George.

Hi George, I’ve not done this job nor am I aware of any of your aforementioned problems mainly because I have an 80 with an auto box which I love.

These then are generic thoughts here.
If by removing the bearing seals you mean removing seals from pre greased 2RS or 2Z bearings so that they run in the oil in the gearbox then I can only see that as a positive step. A, because there’s so much more lubricant to slosh around the bearings and keep them cool and B, because that lubricant can be drained and replaced at intervals.

Aside from this if this guy you’ve been in touch with is the local Guru, the ‘go to’ guy for those gearboxes, then surely his knowledge and experience holds some weight. I think in your position I might let him do the job as it would then be warrantied and would contain all his knowledge. On the other hand I can see why you would want to do it yourself.

At the very least, if that’s what the guy does to his boxes then I can see no reason not to. Unless I’ve read this wrong, I can’t see any reason for having a sealed bearing in a box full of lube that could be lubricating it.

Good luck with it.
