I have some pictures on my old computer of a similar problem and the repair with box section of when I visited my friends in The Netherlands back in 2012??.. Solid repair and the hj61 is still on the road now! Infact they do sell the inner infill sections to fully box out the rear chassis, also an option.

When I get some time later I will get some pictures up for you... provided the pictures weren't taken on my now broken smart phone, but I don't think they were.

Also on the 90 forum side there finiterex 's 95 which had a new rear chassis section made and fitted. Which will shed some light on the process for you.

It's all possible!

I managed to dig out these pic's for you man..

It is a body off job in this case, but worth considering when the body needs attention.

This chassis needed a new rear cross member also and the hoop that supports the rear shocks etc.

So the rear of the chassis has been boxed off and the 60 series was the last of the cruisers which had the open rear chassis and the 40 has much more of an open chassis quite a long way towards the drivers seat from looking at them! 70 series onwards are fully boxed off as such!

Really glad to have dug up these pictures as this work really shows the way forward with this aspect of 60 resurrection!

Hope the info helps you maan!

Hi John, boxing it off is an option, in the past I have de riveted that section, removed the inner strengthening piece and replaced it with another piece of channel and bolted it all together which worked well. I've also seen it boxed with a bigger piece of channel on the outside.
This Idea of reinforcing the chassis around the rear spring idea wasn't one of Toyotas best ideas. I've had a fair few 80's and everyone one is the same.
