Rear Upper Shock Mount

Whilst fitting new ARB bushes I noticed that my near side shock was moving in the top mount. Having taken the shock off it looks like there is some wear on the hole the shock mounts through.

Anyone know what size this hole is supposed to be? the pin on the top of the shock is 10mm but the bush that sit below has a flange that I assume sits inside the hole. 12mm looks like it might be a little tight so could the hole be 14mm?

Bush looks like this

I wouldn't over think it Mark the rear shock has to move and so as long as it can't fall off i can't see how it matters , without play at the top you would never get the shock on the bottom mount .

I was thinking on similar lines Shayne.

If the holes have enlarged massively, I would simply find a suitable plate washer that fits over the bush, then weld it in.

But if theyve just ovalised a bit, I’d just replace the rubbers and see how it goes.

Mmm maybe I just need some new bushes, or I should remove the other side to compare.

I did have quite a lot of movement whereas the other side has none. Looking at the Bush it’s worn on one side of the smaller raised section. Got a range of repair washers and so I’ll probably use the thickest.

Replaced all my chassis bushing Mark recently including two of the rear parts your enquiring about underneath the trunk space.

After driving for around a month can say there improved ride and 50% less vibration through the cabin.

I kept all the old ones including the one in the picture, could have a look for you and I agree with the guys above.

Had another look today now its a little warmer (so much nicer working on the truck in warmer climates!) and it looks like the hole I was worried about is 20mm and only very slightly oval so I guess I need to replace the bushes.

The amount of movement was alarming though. I've also had a long and frustrating issue with a knock from that side that I cannot trace and goes when the truck is loaded up. Just had to pop out quickly on 3 shocks and that knock has gone :). Bit surprised really as its been doing it for a few years and the shock were new just after I purchased the truck. Can't recall if Toyota du Maroc supplied new bushes though.

It sounds like the bush is worn which may have caused the damper spindle to wear the mount a bit. There should be one or two bushes, depending on design, with the raised centre bit in your photo sitting in the mount hole. The damper shouldn't be loose in the hole even with the weight off it.

Yeah bushes are pretty knackered. Looking on the parts diagram with my 2 bush set up there should be 3 washers so the order is washer, bush, washer, chassis, bush, washer, nut. I only have 2 washers, I guess I lost one when the orginal shocks broke in the sahara 7 years ago!

Seems most aftermarket shocks miss out the middle washer so maybe its not needed really.

Seems strange to have a washer against the chassis, I would have thought washer, bush, chassis, bush, washer, nut. The shaft of the damper needs to be isolated from the mount by the bushes, putting the extra washer in defeats this.

Exactly what I thought and the aftermarket kits don't have the 3rd washer. But the Toyota parts diagram show it, part no 9094802119

I made a sandwich of the chassis with mine so its secure but loose like this , it has to have free play that's why it has bushes .

I think that middle washer is typical Toyota bit of over-engineering. There's much headscratching over the issue on various other forums (it affects Hiluxes, Tundras etc also).

The photo below is the part. The protruding ring is designed to fit into and protect the mounting hole on the chassis, even though the correct rubber bush ALSO fits into and protects the mounting hole on the chassis.

(Needless to say, none of the aftermarket shocks I've ever used have either the middle washer or the protruding nipple on the lower bush.)

Finally got replacements from Toyota. Parts guy tried to tell me both bushes are the same but they’re not.

With the third retainer and new bushes the shock is much more secure. Appears that the bush is to stop the pin on the shock wearing the chassis hole. Probably not essential but I d rather wear the retainer than you he chassis mount.

You can get the retainers much cheaper on eBay from a landrover specialist than Toyotas price but even then the cost is only a few pounds.

Once I get my ps sorted I’ll find out if my knock from you be rear has gone
