went car shopping today..

other than fitting a new heater blower theres been little work done on the old girl. shes been earning her keep though.

last week after driving back from collecting a load of fire wood there was some very nasty clunking and grinding sounds coming from the rear drivers side wheel. about two seconds later the wheel locked solid. this was interesting at 50 mph.. so after leaving an awesome skid mark on the road i backed up a little and it freed off. not wanting to cause further damage i called in the 80 and towed the 5.2 tons back to base.

should get time to have a look this week.

Ooohh errrrr... hope thats not the portal gears

Tbh I think it is Bob, apparently a bearing can collapse and, well, you can imagine the rest..

so 3 tons of 80, 5.2 tons of Unimog and a ton of wood all pulled by an engine thats probably over 20 years old.......

good advert for Toyota
about that yes. i always use low box in these situations to put less strain on the old dear and not to slip the clutch. was quite a funny sight really. plenty of looks from other 4x4 owners.

lol.
ill pass on the kind words. they will be in stark contrast to the swearing thats surely soon to follow..

Bad news that Mike, but what the heck, sonly money...

Are you sure there was only one skid mark ???
Wrestling with that at 50 mph must have put a strain on the old sphincter...

Spot the ball bearing?
The portal has two gears inside, each with inner and outer bearings. The top one which the half shaft slots into is called the drive gear. The outer bearing has totally collapsed.
The lower gear attaches to the hub and is called the output gear.

interestingly the drive gear outer bearing is old style deep groove ball bearing. the output gear bearing is roller. non are tapered.

will strip the portal tomorrow and see what the rest of the damage is.

Got the portal on the bench and took the gears and bearings out of the housing;

Note my new form of transport at the moment..
