You do not continue to wrestle with the wheel to such an extent that you bend the steering rod. :naughty:

By the way, your arm (the one on the car) :clap: has been bent so many times that serious strength loss is inevitable.

By adding in strength to the arm, you will inevitably transfer the loadings to the ball joints and they are not designed to take this kind of abuse.

i understand what your saying Roger, but i didnt have to wrestle the steering at all, and it didnt feel like my wheel was against anything. it was only when i started reversing and realised that i wasnt going in the direction i should have been, that i realised there was something up with the steering.

the power steering must be really good if im able to bend a bar just by turning the wheel, and without it feeling like i was turning against anything. :?
 
or the bar is really weak already :idea:

yes i think the bar is really weak, especially after its already been bent a few times. :thumbdown:

so what wall thickness of tube should i use to sleeve the new bar?

i think if i beef up both the bars, if i then inadvertently try turning the steering wheel and the wheel is against a rock or tree stump, then i should then feel through the steering wheel that my wheel is against something. :thumbup:
 
use a micrometer and measure the outside dimension of the pipe you are going to cover. then head off with the micrometer to your local metal supply and measure the inside dimensions of various pipes. find one that comes close to the size needed and then get them to cut it to length. the length will be 1" INSIDE the groves cut in the original pipe.
the actual pipe thickness isn't that important but 1/8" to 3/16" wall thickness would be nice.

DO NOT COVER THE SLITS IN THE ORIGNAL TUBE ...

the 1 hole that isnt obliterated is because one of the studs in the spacer was already snapped off.

i want some arch extensions/fender flares to cover the tyres.

doesnt seem to be many options out there. :think:

depends on the quality, i know fiberglass can be wickedly strong or pure crap depending on the artist making the item.
the second one doesn't seem to say what it is made of.
the rubber is generic, will keep the mud and dirt off and will flex easy enough but needs to be installed properly otherwise looks like goose crap.
the newer version will not fit...

I'm after the same thing Ben.Maybe the self fit rubber ones are the way to go. Not sure - but we could share postage if that's what we go for.

You can get the rubber strip in the UK from Billy at www.4x4scotland.com - Bushranger Fender Flares in 3m lengths; I got some 65mm strip for Muxley but havent fitted it yet - looks good on the roll though 8-)

I'm sure it was sent straight from TBR so maybe you'd get some forum discount buying direct...

I think if they are installed with a rolled metal strip sandwiching the rubber to the wheel arch they'd be well fixed on; & with a bit of judicious trimming, they would look [strike:v7odxfns]quite good[/strike:v7odxfns] okay...

Also available in 35mm width, Mike Hatton has those fitted to his ZooZoo pickup which look vay neat :mrgreen:
 
I bought a full set of these from Oz and fitted them to my rear arches, but I never really did like the look of them :thumbdown: I ended up giving the rubber strip for the fronts away to someone on here, I forget who though

Mine fitted OK, very simple to attach, I just didn't like the way they stuck out at at right angles from the arch proper, didn't look right somehow :think: .

I have something similar on the rear of my truck (because the rubbish OEM fibreglass units broke the first time I took it off road) but Im not happy with it at all, it looks rubbish. I am working on some polyurethane rubber versions of the OEM ones but itll probably be late spring at the earliest until Ive got a prototype to test.
 
Gav, do you think that this would fit on the rear arch and be missed by the rear door when it opens? Thereby you wouldn't have to have a join in there where the door fits?

Sorry for the thread hijack Be, but we are on page 2085 by now.

Just wondering if the 35 mm version would be enough for a normal truck Gav. They look quite large. I need some images of them fitted or offered up at least. The factory pics in the advert look nothing like this at all.
