Hi,
My prado 90 radio is terrible, id like to keep the look of the original, can any one spare the time to explain my options?

Terrible in what way ?

I think you will struggle to find a modern double din radio with so many buttons nowadays and most simply swap for touchscreen .

If you want to keep the truck looking as original as possible perhaps upgrading the speakers will help as you can't actually see them ?

Try the Kenwood 5200bt or pioneer S820. Obviously aftermarket but buttons, screen and large volume knob so doesn’t look as odd as some. I have an alpine one but I don’t think they produce it anymore, though they’re showing on fleabay second hand. Agree with Shayne above about changing the speakers too

Has to be said so long as i fits well any modern double din head unit doesn't look out of place .

Think the one I put in my 27 year old 80 series looks like it could be original equipment . For about £70 i got a Chinese unit with a map card slot , an SD card slot , built in gps navigation , CD player and a backup camera .

Its been in a few years now and the only thing i don't like about it is navigation wants an address rather than just a postcode so i usually use a Garmin on the dash instead . Run both at the same time and the route is identical .

Could always keep the original there just for looks and put a Bluetooth amp behind the dash! Depends on how much you use the radio and have data I guess!

I had a pioneer double din unit in mine since 2008, and only recently swapped it out for an android unit. The pioneer was fantastic, with Bluetooth phone and music, ahead of its time, and still works perfectly after 16 years. The Android went in purely because I had it left over out of my daily driver that died. If it's sound quality you want, then forget about a cheap android, it works fine but podcasts can be a bit low.

Then you're into power output vs what the speakers can handle. The stock units are not all that bad, so I would be suggesting a good branded 2 din unit like Pioneer or Sony as they have the output. Whether android or not is up to you

Well thanks to you all who wrote a reply and I will try and report back, I'm trying to keep the original because it has cd AND cassette player which I feel is good fun to show the kids these now rare players.
i think I will try once more to see if i can improve the radio reception and also clean the CD player head? then fit a hidden bluetooth receiver and amp, with new speakers just cos I'm doing it.
Any thoughts or suppliers /recommendations gratefully recieved.

It’s quite a cool thing to do. I put one in an old Pilot valve radio from 1936 after I restored it. Quite a talking point when friends first saw it.

Guess I'm lucky because I think radio is about having annoying people chat nonsense through the music you want to listen to .

When I finally worked out how to play music from an SD card that will hold more tracks than I could possibly hope to remember I'd only saved 2 CD's to the SD which is the only music I've listened to in the 3 years since

I will get around to mixing it up with a few more one day :confusion-waiting:
