Hi all, a very new to me 1HDFT. It has a disabled Theft Deterrent System according to the PO. I replaced the timing belt and water pump, but when I reconnected the batteries, the hazard lights flash. Sometimes the engine cranks, usually nothing but a click. I've tried all sorts of combinations of locking and unlocking doors, pressing the fob thingy that came with the car (although that is meant to be disabled), but it does very much seem like it is something to do with the TDS. Any help very gratefully appreciated.

Are you able to unlock and try to start the car just with the key?
Just to try and help isolate if the problem is with the TDS or something else.
Is the battery charged and in good health?
Was is running before your did the timing belt?

Thanks for the reply mate. The fob thingy doesn't actually unlock the car - it just de-activates the TDS. It was running fine prior to the timing belt/water pump, and batteries are charged. I've read that the TDS has an LED light on the center console when activated, which is showing - but it is only my second day of ownership, and not taken any notice whether the LED light is normally there or not. The most electrical thing with the timing belt and water pump, was removing the crossover pipe and EGR, with lots of hoses and plugs - but these were all reconnected. I do like the 1HDT simplicity. Thanks for the comment!

Assuming you have fully charged batteries, you could try disconnecting both earth terminals, switch on the key and then reconnect the batteries. This used to work on our one fitted with the alarm the main agents fitted (Scorpion)

Post a picture of the fob. If Scorpion I think I know how to bypass it. OK it's been "disconnected" but it might be worth a try.

You don't say what year the truck is but if it's a UK spec 1HD-FT I'd say It's more likely to have the TVSS system fitted which is just an alarm and not an immobiliser, at least it is on mine. The fob arms/disarms the alarm and locks/unlocks the doors with appropriate indicator flashes. The immobiliser is in the key.
The TVSS also has a LED, mounted in the lower central area of the dash on mine.

Hi Towpack. It is a late 1995 UK spec 1HDFT manual - with 80,000 miles and super rusty. I'll get a picture of the fob thingy - but it is Toyota and has MPT 1340 on the back. This is the paperwork I got with car about the system. The LED light near the centre console lights up red, which is why I suspected it was something to do with the TDS system, that and not being able to start the car! But speaking to the PO (one owner vehicle), he said he had this system disconnected. I'll go back through the vehicle this morning and see if there is anything I have missed - think I need to think beyond the TDS. Thanks for all the help.

The fob has two buttons (black and red) and a red LED which lights up when pressing either of the buttons. On the back it has MPT 1340 - the car and key are stranded elsewhere, but I'll get back to it today and take a pic. Any suggestions on sequence or something to try would be appreciated.

OK, from your description of the fob and the diagram I would say it's not the TVSS system.
This is the fob for the TVSS......

A bent key might not be obvious so check it against your cash card

That is the Scorpion alarm fob. The alarm and immobiliser were factory fitted using a manual supplied with the parts from Scorpion. I have the same system on my '95 and it has been 100% reliable.

Disable Alarm :- Unplug 918T box ( located behind and high up of the glove box ) Join the yellow/red and purple/black wires together.

Disable Immobiliser :- Join together the spliced wires as described and shown in the enclosed picture. Not very clear sorry.

I would use 5 (?) amp fuses to protect any wiring as I have never needed to do this.

Cheers all. All been very helpful and appreciated. But I have admitted defeat and towed it a garage. I really hate auto-electrics. Will let you know the fix (I hope).

Cars used to be scraped because of too much expensive rust problems. Now it's electrical death.

I think I've spent more time towing than driving this new (to me) 1HDFT! Unfortunately, none of the quick wins worked for me. But grateful to a local garage that managed to remove the entire system. Thanks to all that helped troubleshoot.

Has the removal of all of that fixed it?
Yes - spoke with the PO today and he said he just used the FOB to unlock/lock doors, which in the past fixed the issue - so as it turns out it really wasn't disabled. We tried every combination offered by google search to try get the FOB working - just bad luck I guess. Pulling out the entire system worked - no issues at present. Manual 1HDFT with 80K miles - it's lovely to finally drive and pleased to have it out of the car.
