Should I trust this body repair

Looks like a thick layer of filler over a previously treated old rust repair to me. Not a deal breaker by any means, but suggests there may be more filler in the body than you might like. Have you gone over it with a magnet? I'd be interested to understand if this has had a full respray at some...

FOR SALE WITH NEARLY NEW ENGINE

Looks very tidy, same colour as ours before Jan got hold of it LOL! May be worthwhile posting pics of the underside, especially on this forum. Good luck with the sale :-)

    Buying on pictures?

I've bought a couple of vehicles like this - best if you can get the seller on a live video feed and ask questions, get them to focus on anything that you don't like the look of, open and close all the doors, drive it through the gears, etc, etc. Still a risk, but it helps with confidence.

    80 Series brake lines - pre-made?

Cheers Ciderman. I have done some brake lines a while back, also on a Mini and a Landy, but I borrowed the tool from a mate at the time. I wasn't sure if the 80 series fittings are different, but I guess I could buy the kit and give it a go... Ref getting from Amayama, or similar, I would have...

    80 Series brake lines - pre-made?

Hi all, Was investigating a "clunk" under the back of the 80 series today (but that's another story, for another thread!), and noticed one of the rear brake lines was slightly damp. On investigation, yup - its brake fluid weeping. Looks like the clamp where the line is attached to the axle is...

    Really?

Lord knows - the market is weird at the moment - but if its been done properly and was a full body-off restoration, what they're asking isn't mad money.
  8. D

    Really?

Possibly - but seems odd to include photos of the fully built up car before having the chassis off, if that's a major selling point? Seems weird to me, but maybe I'm just suspicious!
  9. D

    Really?

Hang on though... one of the under wheel arch pictures shows a slightly rusty chassis and completely different suspension to the body off pictures. So are the body off pictures actually the same truck? Seems a bit weird...

Adventure & Overland Show - ENDING!

Just twigged this... the Overland show is being cancelled due to spiralling costs, but will be relaunched as a campervan show...not sure why this would be cheaper to run though!? Weird... Bad K in Germany still runs happily, so there is clearly market for this kind of thing. Ho hum...

    Milners or Pedders standard springs?

That said, Andy, we've been running Pedders +2" on the 80 for 5 or 6 years now and been really happy with them - truck rides nicely and handles predictably. Can't comment on the standard ride height ones though.

    Rust Repairs and Respray

Finding a decent bodyshop is a major bonus (and seems like a bit of a unicorn). The guys that did the bodywork and paint on our 80 did a decent enough job of the main bodywork, but made a mess of refitting the wiring (screwed up the headlights completely) and a few other annoying issues...

    Odd MOT argument today

Fair comment TP - but so what? Driving in normal daylight with your lights on isn't likely to dazzle anyone. Hell, I drive around with my lights on half the time to make sure the old biddies around my way can see me (apparently a couple of tons of 4x4 is difficult to spot)... I always thought...

Anyone else had issues with their Pedders 2" setup?

Sorry - late to the party, but I've been running a similar set up (Pedders +2) for several years and no issues with mysterious bangs or clunks at this stage.... Be interested to hear back when you've sorted the body mount, if that resolves things. Good luck :-)

    Really?

Not sure about sorting the wheat from the chaff, Andy, more like separating the well off from their money. Some of the restomod companies charge outrageous fees. I can think of better uses for £200k TBH!

    Possible upgrade?

Your wife doesn't like the 80, 60 or a ute? Maybe reconsider your marriage LOL! (Fortunately my missus has an 80 and also drives my Hilux). Joking aside, my concern in the UK would be rust on a 120 or 150... but maybe less an issue in Oz, depending where it's lived and what it was used for...

    many questions, please

Ref 4 - it depends what width your trailer wheels are - running something like 235/85r16s on both the car and trailer would be a close enough match and similar to your current 265/70r16s so as not to mess up gearing etc, but you'd need to check if they'd fit the trailer wheels okay. There are a...

    LC 300

I hear you Grimbo - I think the expression goes "there's no replacement for displacement". Which is kinda true, but it depends on the motor (there are some big displacement engines that are basically shite, of course. But I understand that an under-stressed V8 will always last longer than a 2.8...
  28. D

    LC 300

Aye, I understood the background to the track differences, I was more surprised that MrT didn't sort this out on the 2.8 version as they don't need the wider track.. or maybe just widen the rear and have done with it. Seems an odd decision to leave it as it is, other than for penny-pinching...

    Really?

Even if unused, it would still be a 20+ year old vehicle, with degradation of electrics, rubbers, etc, etc... Personally I'd struggle to justify paying much more than £20-25k for a stock 80 series, regardless of the mileage etc. One that's rebuilt, decent usable mods, etc.. maybe a bit more...
  30. D

    LC 300

Can't comment on the 250, but the new 70 series 2.8 is apparently faster and more powerful than the V8 diesel and essentially still running all the HD underpinnings, inc the mismatched front and back track (for reasons I can't work out!). Still reckon if they sold it here for under £50k OTR it...
  31. D

    LC 300

Yeah, I like the look of the 250 TBH, early reviews suggest its a good 'un and will take sales from LR and Merc. I also notice that the new 70 series (just out in Australia) is running 2.8 Hilux running gear - so presumably would meet current EU emissions requirements, which begs the question...

Question 80 gurus: Slack in the rear propshaft splines... is it just a case of replacing the prop or...

Lorin - my XJ was a heavily modified off-roader and the 4.0 petrol 6 produced more BHP than the 80 4.2 diesel, albeit less torque - I didn't have any issues with it in heavy use, so I think its certainly do-able for an 80... but I do take your point, there will be an element of risk there going...

Thanks guys. I did have a custom made prop built for my competition XJ years back, place in Wales did it. ... is there any point/benefit in just replacing the front section (UJ sleeve)? If I need to replace the whole thing, any recommendations on a supplier? I'm assuming that a Mr T prop will cost me my right kidney and my first born child?

What's going on with the tyre situation in UK?

TBH I think if you're doing 95% road work, including some ice, snow, etc, then you'll be happy enough, I just wouldn't fancy using them to bash across Morocco :-)

What's going on with the tyre situation in UK?

Hi Jon - mentioned it previously, I've got the Geolanders on my Hilux and 4x4 Sprinter - they last well, are well behaved on the road, decent wet weather grip, but are a pretty mild AT and personally I think the overall construction is lighter than any of the MT Coopers, BFGs or similar. It's...

    1hdft 3" exhaust upgrade

    1hdft 3" exhaust upgrade

Presumably if it's exiting behind the back wheel you might as well exit out the rear as normal... or am I missing something? FWIW I did have a side exit on my old RR Classic for a while, which came out just in front of the back wheel - no issue with fumes, but I did crush it off-road and...

I know I know.... another tyre question... sorry

Yeah, I don't tow very often with ours, with a light trailer you don't notice it at all, but I could see if you were towing a car on a trailer it could be more a concern. As Grimbo says, though, unless this is likely to be a regular requirement, I wouldn't worry too much.

I know I know.... another tyre question... sorry

No material difference at all. 285s seem much better balanced to the size of the truck and improved overall ride quality. Maybe a slight impact of mpg, but nothing worth talking about. 285s are really common on 80 series.

    76 For Sale in Holland

I know I know.... another tyre question... sorry

Hiya I've got GO15s on both my Sprinter 4x4 and my Hilux. As GOK says, they're a decent enough tyre, work well on road and wear slowly. Downsides are that they're a pretty mild AT pattern, so not great in mud, and personally I thought the entire carcass is lighter weight than say a BFG or...
